January 11, 2008 UNION CITY
It was a long bus ride to Union City for Covington on Friday, but an enjoyable one as the Buccaneers ended an eight-game losing skid with a 62-54 victory over Mississinawa Valley.
"You could tell a weight was lifted off their (the kids) shoulders when we went into the locker room after the game," said Covington coach Roger Craft after a hard-fought win. "These kids have put in a lot of hard work each and every day in practice and it was good to see some smiles on their faces."
Craft knew a win was a matter of time because his team has been in every contest heading into the fourth quarter only to see his team fall short in the end.
"The kids never lost their confidence," Craft said. "It was a matter of doing the little things right - like taking care of the basketball, rebounding and being more aggressive taking the ball to the basket."
Those elements are what made the difference Friday as Covington was successful in two out of the three aspects of the game Craft pointed out.
Covington shot a season-high 33 free throws and held a 38-16 advantage on the boards, including a 15-4 edge at the offensive end.
The only aspect of the game where Covington struggled was taking care of the ball as it committed 21 turnovers.
"A lot of those turnovers were because we were attacking the basket," explained Craft. "When you shoot 33 free throws and rebound the way we did tonight, you have a good chance of winning. The kids are starting to understand the benefits of being aggressive."
Another positive for Covington was balanced scoring as nine players scored on the evening.
But it was Kody Thiebeau who set the tone with his all-around solid play. The senior led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds, but the biggest statistic describing how impressive Thiebeau's performance was is the fact he didn't have a single turnover.
"Kody's getting tougher in his play," Craft said. "He's a senior, so it's easy to forget that this is his first year at the varsity level. He has great athletic ability, but he doesn't really know just how good he can be. He's now starting to get confidence in himself and it's showing on the floor."
Andy Sparks also scored in double figures with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jordy Meyer had a good night on the boards with 11 rebounds.
Covington shot 41% from the floor by converting on 20 of 49 attempts. The Buccs also had a good night at the free throw line, making 20 of 33 attempts.
But if Covington wants to take the next step, it has to find a way to minimize the turnovers.
"We are making strides," said Craft. "We defend well. We're improving on crashing the boards. And we're more aggressive taking the ball to the basket. Once we learn to take care of the basketball, we'll be tough to beat."
Craft and his Buccs, who improve to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the CCC, look for continued improvement Saturday at New Bremen.
