February 8, 2008 – LEWISBURG
When you hold a 33-17 rebounding advantage and have 56 shot attempts to 44 for the other team, a win is likely in the cards.

But not for the Covington Buccaneers, who closed out the regular season with a frustrating 54-52 loss at Tri-County North, Friday.

"It's disappointing," said Covington coach Roger Craft in regards to the loss. "When you look at some of the stats, you'd think we won going away."

The one statistic that killed Covington's chances was the 20-45 shooting from inside 10 feet.

"We got the ball where we wanted it all night long," Craft continued. "When you take 45 shots from within 10 feet of the basket you should make at least 30 of those. We didn't even make 50% of those shots."

Tri-County North didn't do anything Craft and the Buccs didn't expect coming into the game as the Panthers held the ball at the corners against Covington's zone.

Covington countered with the trap and then went to a man-to-man defense.

"We knew when they saw a zone they would hold the ball," Craft explained. "We went to a trap and then a man-to-man and had some success."

Still, North built a 10-7 lead at the end of the first period and a 21-17 lead at the break.

Covington's adjustments in the third quarter resulted in a 21-13 scoring advantage in the frame to put the Buccs on top 38-34.

What Craft and the Buccs didn't expect, however, was five three-pointers by the Panthers in the fourth quarter. Three of those came on consecutive possessions that erased an eight-point Covington lead early in the final period.

"In the two games we scouted them they didn't make any threes," said Craft. "They didn't make any heading into the fourth quarter, so we wanted them to take those shots, especially with the way we were rebounding. Give them credit, they made the shots when they needed them."

Meanwhile, Covington missed on several opportunities to seal the game in the fourth quarter from inside the paint. But the shots just wouldn't fall.

"We missed way too many shots right under the basket," Craft said. "That was the difference in the game."

Covington was led by Jordy Meyer, who scored a team-high 17 points and nine rebounds.

Ben Christian tallied 13 points and 8 rebounds, while Andy Sparks scored 12 and pulled down 7 boards.

Covington was 20-56 from the field for 36% and 1 of 11 from behind the arc, while Tri-County North shot 43% on 19 of 44 shooting.

The Panthers were 5 of 15 from behind the arc, 5 of 7 in the fourth quarter.

The Buccs made 11 of 15 free throw attempts, while Tri-County North was 11 for 18.

Covington heads into tournament play with a 5-15 record and finished at 3-9 in the Cross County Conference.

"The tournament is a new season," Craft said. "Everyone is 0-0 and has to start over. We have to get ourselves prepared."

The Buccs play the Fort Loramie - Jackson Center winner on Tuesday, February 19th at Piqua High School.
