Buccaneer head basketball coach Roger Craft has his hands full trying to get his team prepared in time for the season opener on December 1st against Versailles.

Due to the football team's success, Craft wasn't able to see all of his players in the gymnasium until December 19th - leaving him less than two weeks to prepare for the season.

Throw in the Thanksgiving Holiday to juggle the practice schedule around, the kids won't have a lot of practice time under their belts as a unit when they talk the floor for the season opener.

But, you won't hear Craft complaining.

"We'll take this any time," said Craft in regards to his team having limited time in order to prepare for the season. "That just means our football team had a successful season and we always want that. Hopefully the success on the football field translates into success on the court."

While most teams are already playing games across the state, the Buccaneers don't yet have the starting line-up figured out. That's because only two letterman return from last season and no starters return.

The two returning letter winners are senior Jordy Burelison and junior Andy Sparks. Burelison was a key contributor off the bench as a dependable ball handler and defender on the perimeter. Sparks spent the first half of last season primarily playing junior varsity ball, but worked his way into varsity action down the stretch.

Both players will step up in leadership rolls this year.

A number of players move up from junior varsity to challenge for starting positions, including seniors Bill Dickey, Kody Thiebeau and J.J. Thompson. Dickey and Thiebeau are two athletic guards who can handle the ball and penetrate to the basket. Thompson is a bruiser under the basket capable of controlling the boards and playing solid defense.

Juniors Kyle Kanet and Nate Lavey will also be in the mix for varsity action. Like Dickey and Thiebeau, both are dependable guards with quickness and athleticism.

Also in the mix will be three sophomores and a freshman. The sophomores are Jordy Meyer, Adam Craft and Ben Christian. Each is big, strong, athletic and physical.

The freshman capable of seeing varsity action is Josh Boehringer. At 6'1", 180 pounds, Boehringer is a hard-nosed, physical kid with outstanding athletic ability for his age. As he gains experience and becomes acclimated to the speed of the game at the high school level, Boehringer could be a force down the stretch.

Obviously, the Buccaneers will be younger and more inexperienced than in years past. It may take a while for the team to gel as a unit on the floor.

But a competitive schedule and a solid work ethic will have the Buccs battle tested and prepared come tournament time.
