JANUARY 31, 2009 - COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers can't seem to catch a break as the weather forced two straight games to be cancelled after the team was riding the momentum of a two-game winning streak.
To top it off, the Buccs had to come back and face a very talented Anna team with just two loses on their record.
"The kids wanted to play (the two games that were cancelled earlier in the week)," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "But you can't control things like that. What we can control is coming in and playing hard like we did tonight."
And the Buccs did play hard as they gave the visiting Rockets all they could handle and then some, despite falling short by the score of 59-53.
"I'm proud of how the kids played," Craft continued. "I think we turned the corner. We're playing with confidence. I just wish we could have gotten the win in this one."
In what was a physical affair, the Buccs were right in the mix throughout and eventually held a 49-48 lead with 3:30 to play.
But Anna closed out the contest by outscoring Covington 11-4 to claim the victory.
"We had our chances," Craft stated. "We had a one-point lead late in the game and needed just one or two more shots to fall and the outcome may have been different. Instead, they (Anna) were able to get a couple of baskets in transition and then spread the floor. It's tough to play catch-up against them when they have a lead late in the game."
What really hurt Covington's chances was the 19 first half points put up by Wes Hunsucker and the 22 free throw attempts the Rockets had throughout the contest.
"They beat us on the perimeter in the first half," Craft explained. "Hunsucker got 19 of his 21 points and they hit all eight of their three's in the first half. But the free throws were the difference. When they shoot 22 and we only shoot six, that hurts."
Especially considering Covington held the Rockets to just five field goals in the second half.
"We played outstanding defensively, especially in the second half," said Craft. "We took away their inside game and they have some big, athletic kids. I felt we were just as strong, if not stronger than them inside."
Which made for some pushing and shoving throughout the contest.
"I told the kids before the game that we match up with them better than a lot of teams because of our strength and we can match them physically," Craft explained. "I felt that if we could match them on the boards and not let their inside guys control the game that we would have a pretty good chance of winning."
Which Covington did as it held a 22-21 overall advantage on the boards and a 7-6 advantage at the offensive end.
Plus, Anna's big men were held in check offensively with Neikamp only scoring six points and Billing accounted for three points.
And the Buccs had their chances to win, only to fall short in the final 3:00.
"I really wish we could have gotten this one, but we are getting things going at the right time," Craft said. "Anna is a very good basketball team that is well coached. They have the whole package as far as size and athletic ability. We played very well, but we just didn't make enough plays down the stretch to get the win."
Covington converted on 22 of 48 field goal attempts for 45%, 19 of 37 from inside the paint for 51% and six of six from the charity stripe.
The Buccs struggled from behind the arc, making just three of 11 for 27%.
Anna shot 17 for 40 from the floor for 42%, nine of 20 from inside the paint for 45% and eight of 20 from three-point land for 40%.
The Rockets sealed the contest at the free throw line by making 17 of 22 for 77%.
Eric Beckstedt led Covington with 12 points, while Ben Christian dropped in nine points.
The Buccs fall to 5-9 overall and look to get back to their winning ways on Tuesday at Franklin Monroe in a make-up game.
