JANUARY 9, 2009 - ANSONIA
When you surrender a 19-2 run on the other team's home floor, the odds of capturing a win in a hostile environment are slim.
And the 19-2 run the Covington Buccaneers surrendered to Ansonia after building a 9-4 lead early on ultimately cost them in a 47-36 defeat - the sixth straight after opening the season with three consecutive wins.
"The second quarter was the difference in the game," said Roger Craft, who's team is now 3-6 overall and 2-2 in Cross County Conference play. "We scored two points in the quarter and give up 17. The bottom line is you can't have quarters like that where you are non-existent offensively."
Still, the Buccaneers battled their way back into the game after trailing 23-13 at the break thanks to a stellar effort by Ben Christian, who finished with a team-high 21 points in the contest.
The junior scored 11 of Covington's 14 third quarter points to bring the Buccs with four points at the end of the frame, 31-27.
Then the Buccs closed the gap to 36-34 midway through the fourth quarter and appeared to have the momentum going their way.
"We cut the lead to two and had the ball," Craft described. "But we were never able to make the plays we needed to get the lead."
Much of that was due to Covington's inconsistency inside the paint, which has been a problem in each of the previous five losses.
The Buccs only converted on 11 of 27 shots from two-point range.
"We've got to be able to score," Craft emphasized. "When you shoot 40% for two's, that takes Eric (Beckstedt) out of the game. Then they can put a man on him and follow him around because the threat inside isn't there."
And its not like the Buccs don't have opportunities.
"We're getting good looks at the basket," continued Craft. "We're just not knocking down shots right now."
Ansonia was able to take advantage by outscoring the Buccs 11-2 over the remainder of the contest for the 47-36 victory.
"The bottom line is we've got to make plays," said Craft. "It's as simple as that."
All six of Covington's losses came on the road as the Buccs haven't had a home game since December 12.
With Milton coming to town tomorrow night, Craft and the Buccs are looking forward to playing in a familiar environment for a change.
"It seems like we've been n the road forever," he said. "We had the Bethel game cancelled, so haven't played at home in a month. Hopefully the weather holds out and we can play in our own gym for a change."
Still, Craft isn't using a tough road stretch as an excuse for six straight defeats.
"You can't make excuses and we won't," Craft stated. "We won't feel sorry for ourselves because we've had a tough stretch of games. There are tougher things going on in our community right now to get worked up over this. The kids will keep things in perspective and come back tomorrow night and give their all."
Covington connected on 14 of 39 shots from the floor for 35% and just 3 of 12 from behind the arc for 25%.
The Buccs also struggled from the free throw line, shooting 5 of 11 for 45%.
Ansonia converted on 16 of 36 from the field for 44%, 12 of 22 from inside the paint and 4 for 14 from behind the arc.
The Tigers were 11 for 20 from the charity stripe for 55% and only committed 5 turnovers to 11 for Covington.
The Buccs did hold a 26-20 advantage on the boards and a 10-2 rebounding advantage at the offensive end.
