FEBRUARY 13, 2009 - ARCANUM
The Covington fans made the trip to Arcanum and witness a horror show on of all days, "Friday The 13th" as Arcanum handed the Buccs a 52-36 defeat.

The horror for Covington came on a 14-for-38 shooting performance for 36% and a meager 10-for-29 (34%) from inside the paint. Covington was also 4-for-9 from outside the arc (44%) and shot only five free throws on the night, making four.

"Shooting woes. That's the only way to describe it," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "We just didn't shoot the ball well at all."

The Trojans didn't exactly light things up as they only converted on 47% from the floor on a 16-fr-36 shooting night and 13-for-25 from two-point range (52%).

But Arcanum won the game at the free throw line as it shot 22 times and made 17 free throws for 77%.

"As many shots as we took inside, you'd think we'd get to the free throw line more than we did," Craft said. "But it didn't work out that way for us."

The Buccs trailed by just six points at the half, 24-18, but couldn't buy a basket in the third quarter - converting on just three field goals in the frame.

"Defensively, we played really well," said Craft. "When you hold a kid like Balsbaugh to just five points when he's been getting 20 to 25, that's playing good defense."

Covington actually took the first four shots in the second half - all from within eight feet of the basket - but wasn't able to convert on any of them.

Arcanum responded with a trey to push its lead to 27-18 and built a 34-25 lead at the end of the frame.

"We had an easy lay-up in our first possession of the second half and had several shots from right under that basket that we didn't make," Craft described. "Then they go down and make a three. That hurts because instead of being tied or up by a couple we go down by nine."

Forced to foul in the fourth quarter, Covington couldn't close the gap as Arcanum cruised to a 52-36 win.

"It's frustrating when you shoot the ball like we did tonight," said Craft. "We have to find a way to make shots within a couple feet of the basket."

Arcanum held the edge on the boards, pulling down 20 rebounds to 18 for Covington.

The Buccs committed 11 turnovers, while Arcanum had 12.

Jordy Meyer was the lone Buccaneer to score in double figures with 10 points, while Adam Craft scored seven points.

The loss drops Covington's record 7-11 overall and 5-5 in Cross County Conference action.

Covington looks to rebound on Monday as it hosts Mississinawa Valley.
