FEBRUARY 6, 2009 - COVINGTON
Friday's contest between Covington and Bradford was more than a basketball game - it was a showcase of what high school sports is all about - having fun in a clean, classy manner.
And credit the student body from both Covington and Bradford for making this game one to remember, not by what transpired on the floor, but for how each student section conducted themselves throughout the game.
Throughout the entire junior varsity and varsity contests the kids stood and cheered for their team - and shouted chants back and forth to each other. The chants were creative, yet done in a tasteful manner.
"Both student bodies did a great job of creating an exciting atmosphere for the kids to play in," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "Both schools were well represented and the kids enjoyed playing in front of a crowd like that. This was nice to see."
With Covington inviting the elementary kids to cheer at halftime of both the junior varsity and varsity games - and Bradford bringing a large following - the gym was packed.
"It sure is nice to see the gym full," Craft continued. "I know our kids had a lot of fun playing in front of a crowd like that. The crowd really got the kids fired up."
Which was evident as Covington stormed out to a 22-12 lead at the end of the first quarter as Eric Beckstedt drilled three treys and Ben Christian connected on another.
"That was big for us to get out to a fast start offensively, especially after how we played on Tuesday," said Craft. "The kids were disappointed in the way we played against Franklin Monroe and they came out focused tonight."
Bradford cut into Covington's lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter thanks to a stellar effort by Phillip Jones. The junior, who scored a game-high 21 points, sparked a Bradford run to cut the margin to 22-18.
"Jones had quite a game for them," complimented Craft. "He hit some big threes that kept them in the game. He's a nice player."
But Covington picked up the defensive effort, which got the offense on track in the process.
The Buccs responded by outscoring Bradford 12-2 over the remainder of the half to take a 34-20 halftime lead.
"We knew we couldn't let anyone else hurt us," Craft explained. "Jones kept them right there for a while, but we did a good job of not letting anyone else join in."
Bradford matched Covington point-for-point in the third as each team tallied ten points in the frame to keep the margin to 14 points, 44-30.
But Covington broke the game open in the final frame, outscoring Bradford 14-4 to take the 58-34 victory.
"Both teams played very hard," said Craft. "This was just a good, clean, hard played basketball game - the way it should be played."
Covington shot 45% from the floor, making 21 of 46 field goals. The Buccs were 13-26 for 44% from inside the paint, 8-17 from behind the arc (47%) and 8-16 from the free throw line (50%).
Bradford converted on 14 of 38 from the floor for 36%, 10-24 from inside the paint (41%) and 4-14 from the three-point line (28%). The Railroaders were also 2-4 from the free throw line.
But the different in the game was rebounding as Covington held a 35-9 advantage overall and 14-1 at the offensive end.
"We thought we could dominate the boards and we did that," Craft said. "To pull 14 offensive rebounds and allow them just one is huge. That's just great effort from our kids."
Jordy Meyer was the ring leader crashing the boards for the Buccs as he tallied a game-high 11 rebounds.
Adam Craft pulled down nine rebounds to go along with his 13 points, while Ben Christian grabbed six boards and scored a team-high 19 points.
Eric Beckstedt was the third Buccaneer in double figures in scoring with 12 points.
The victory improves Covington's record to 6-10 overall and 4-4 in the Cross County Conference.
The Buccs host Bethel tomorrow night.
"Hopefully we can get a crowd like we did tonight for the Bethel game," Craft challenged. "You don't know how much that means to the kids and how much they appreciate playing in front of a crowd like that."
A crowd that does things the right way too.
