Bittersweet...
Sophomore Eric Beckstedt had a career night with seven treys and 25 points, but it wasn't enough to get the Buccs a win over Miami East.

The Buccaneers struggled inside the paint, shooting a meager 10 for 28.

DECEMBER 16, 2008 - CASSTOWN
Despite a record-tying effort by sophomore Eric Beckstedt, the Covington Buccaneers dropped their second straight game as Miami East handed them a 65-54 defeat.

"Miami East is a good basketball team," praised Covington coach Roger Craft of the Vikings. "When you are playing at their place, it's even tougher. And we're still trying to find ourselves a little bit."

In the contest Beckstedt tied the school record with seven three pointers and scored a career-high 25 points. The seven treys ties Justin Huffman from 1996 and B.J. Smith in 1999.

But it was bittersweet considering it didn't come in a Buccaneer victory.

"Eric would much rather have the win," Craft said. "That's the type of kids he is and he'll tell you it's not just him. The other kids did a good job of finding him for the open shot and he has the ability to knock them down."

What has become Covington downfall in the past few games has been making shots within ten feet of the basket. Trend continued tonight as the Buccs only made 10 of 28 shots in the paint.

On the other hand, Miami East made 21 of 33 shots in the paint.

"That's the difference in the game," Craft said. "We didn't finish our shots inside the paint and they did. Even if we shoot 60% inside the paint, it's a different game. We have to find a way to finish shots. That's the bottom line."

The Buccs have also had problems with pressure defenses, but that wasn't much of an issue tonight as Covington only committed a respectable 10 turnovers.

"We did a much better job of breaking the press tonight," Craft explained. "We were more patient with the basketball and not forcing things."

The Buccs also played well defensively and forced 13 turnovers. But containing Dan Hickman and Logan Carey was a tall task as the duo combined for 37 points.

"Hickman is a good player who makes everyone around him better," Craft said. "It seemed like every time we would get on a nice run to get back into the game he would hit a big shot to turn the momentum. That's a sign of a good player."

Hickman connected for 22 points and also was a factor on the boards with seven rebounds.

The rebounding totals were virtually even with Miami East holding a slim 25-24 advantage overall and the Buccs holding a 7-4 advantage at the offensive end.

Covington shot very well from the free throw line, making 13 of 16 attempts for 81%. Miami East was 11 of 22 from the line for 50%.

The loss drops Covington's record to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Cross County Conference, while Miami East improves to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

The Buccs look to get back to their winning ways next Tuesday as Bethel comes to town.
