FEBRUARY 3, 2009 - PITSBURG
The Hanger was more like "The House of Horrors" for the Covington Buccaneers Tuesday night as anything that could go wrong did go wrong in a frustrating 54-36 loss to Franklin Monroe.
Covington had a horrendous night shooting the basketball, making just 15 field goals in the contest on 45 attempts for 33%. Only two of those field goals were of three-point variety as Covington shot just 11% from behind the arc on 18 attempts.
To make matters worse, the Buccs couldn't hit on their free throw attempts either - only connecting on four of 13 attempts for 30%.
"This is extremely disappointing," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "Especially after the way we've played the last few games, to come in here and play like we did tonight is frustrating."
The two quarters that did Covington in was the first and the fourth as the Buccs only scored eight points combined in the two frames - three in the first and five in the fourth.
This allowed Franklin Monroe to build a big lead at the end of the first quarter, 17-3 and then close the show in the final frame for an 18-point win.
"You won't win many games when you have three or five-point quarters offensively," Craft explained. "To have two quarters like that in one night, it's almost impossible to win."
The offensive struggles were due to things Craft felt his team should have been able to overcome.
"They (Franklin Monroe) were in a zone pretty much all night and we didn't attack their zone," he stated. "We did get some open looks at the basket, but we didn't knock the shots down."
It wasn't only the offensive struggles that was disappointing, but the poor defensive performance had just as much of an impact on the game.
"Our defensive effort wasn't there either," said Craft. "They are a slashing team that likes to penetrate to the basket and we didn't do a very good job of defending it. Our defensive effort carried over to the offensive end and everything just snowballed on us."
Which made the evening that much more frustrating as Covington could never close the gap below double digits after the Jets built a 17-3 lead at the end of the opening frame.
Franklin Monroe also led 29-18 at the half and 42-31 after three.
"We never really got into a flow," Craft said. "It's one of those nights you'd like to forget and move on and that's what we'll have to do."
With a 1-7 record in road games, the Buccs have to find a way to play better away from their own gym - especially with the tournament arriving in the near future.
"We've got to figure out a way to win games on the road," Craft said. "The only road win we have is against Newton and that wasn't pretty at all. We have to find a way to play better on the road."
But first the Buccs have two straight home games against a much improved Bradford team on Friday and Bethel on Saturday.
