December 27, 2008 MARIA STEIN
No matter how well a team plays defensively, when you only make score 34 points in four quarters of basketball, the chance of winning isn't in your favor.
And for the Covington Buccaneers, it meant a third straight defeat - a 48-34 loss at the hands of Marion Local.
"We have to find ways to finish inside," said Covington coach Roger Craft after his team only converted on eight of 20 attempts inside the paint. "We're missing way too many lay-ups, too many three and four footers. We're just not able to finish shots inside the paint."
Thanks to the defensive effort, the Buccaneers managed to stay right with Marion Local until midway through the third period - trailing just 25-24.
But a 13-1 run by the Flyers stretched the deficit to 38-25 in a matter of minutes.
"When you're shooting the way we shot, a run like that is difficult to overcome," said Craft. "We had some momentum at the end of the have when we scored six points in the last 40 seconds of the half to cut it to four. We hit a couple of buckets to start the second half and all the sudden we couldn't hit anything."
The host Flyers took an 11-8 lead at the end of the opening frame and then pushed the lead to 22-12 with under a minute to play in the half.
But Andy Sparks caught fire with a free throw and a steal off the missed free throw that he converted into a lay-up.
Sparks then closed out the half with a trey from the top of the key that just beat the buzzer to make the score 22-18 at the half.
"Andy had one of his better games offensively," Craft said. "But we need everyone to join in and contribute as well."
Still, the Buccs were in the game until the 13-1 third quarter run - a run they couldn't overcome.
"It's not that we stopped playing hard, because we didn't," Craft explained. "We're just having a hard time putting the ball in the basket."
Another problem for the Buccs was pulling down rebounds as the Flyers dominated the boards 21 to 10. Covington only managed just one offensive board as well.
"That's unacceptable," Craft said. "That's extremely disappointing to only get one offensive rebound. That doesn't give you many second or third scoring opportunities."
Another factor in Covington's struggles offensively was the limited scoring opportunities for Eric Beckstedt.
Beckstedt came into the contest as the Buccs' leading scorer and was coming off a 25-point effort against Miami East.
But the sophomore sharp shooter could only manage to get off three shot attempts from behind the arc and ended the contest with three points on one trey.
"They did a nice job defending Eric," said Craft. "But we need to do a better job of finding him in transition and out on the wing in our offensive sets. A lot of that has to do with our inability to make shots inside. The inside, outside game goes hand-in-hand."
Covington concluded the contest with an 11-for-29 shooting night for 37%, while Marion Local was 18-for-36 on the night.
The Buccs connected on 3 of 8 from behind the arc and 9 of 14 from the free throw line.
Covington committed 13 turnovers to just seven for Marion Local.
The loss drops Covington's record to 3-3 on the season and the Buccs take part in the Holiday Tournament at Piqua High School next Friday. The host Indians team is slated to welcome the Buccs at 8:00.
