JANUARY 24, 2009 - COVINGTON
You know it's your night when a three-point attempt banks off the glass, bounces around the rim and falls in.

You know it's your night when you have three players score in double figures and a sophomore comes off the bench to score a game-high 19 points.

You also know it's your night when your team pulls down 19 offensive rebounds and dominates the opponent for 43 total rebounds to 22.

Saturday night, after over a month of frustration with losing close games, the Covington Buccaneers had their night with an impressive 66-52 victory over an athletic and gritty Milton Union team.

"We played some ball tonight, didn't we?" asked Covington coach Roger Craft. "I'm so proud of how these kids have stuck with it through the tough stretch we've had. This is an outstanding group that knows how to fight through adversity."

Throughout the eight-game losing skid and even in Friday's win over Newton, Craft has been saying it was a matter of time before his team started to get some of the shots to fall that were not going down on a nightly basis.

"We knew things would start going our way sooner or later," he explained. "The kids believed it and that's why they continued to work so hard in practice. Hopefully we turned the corner tonight."

Covington did get off to a sluggish start as Milton jumped out to an 11-4 lead.

To make matters worse for the Buccs, Jordy Meyer found himself on the bench with two quick fouls and Andy Sparks was forced into action despite a severely painful ankle.

"It's unfortunate that Jordy picked up those two fouls early because he was playing as hard as I've seen him play," Craft stated. "Andy gave us what he could with his ankle and that's a credit to his toughness."

Despite the early adversity Covington managed to storm its way back to cut the deficit to 23-18 at the end of the opening frame and then tie the score at the half, 34-34.

The game remained tight throughout the third quarter and into the fourth quarter, but the Buccs finally broke the game open in the final 5:00 of the contest.

Sophomore Josh Boehringer sparked the Buccs offensively in the final frame by scoring six straight points, while Jordy Meyer dominated the boards - pulling down three offensive rebounds on one possession alone.

Meyer finished the contest with a game-high 12 rebounds, seven of those coming at the offensive end.

"Jordy had a big night," Crafts praised. "We've been trying to get him to relax and just play and he did that tonight. He's got game."

Adam Craft recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Ben Christian tallied 16 points on the night.

"Adam did a great job of running the offense and managing the game," Craft stated. "Benny (Christian) just continues to give us outstanding effort every night."

But the biggest night belonged to Boehringer, who came off the bench to lead Covington with 19 points. He and also pulled down nine rebounds.

And Boehringer's performance was critical as both Meyer and Christian were in foul trouble, while Sparks couldn't give much more than spot minutes with his ankle.

"That was a big-time performance by Josh," Craft said. "For a sophomore to come off the bench after playing a half of JV ball and give us the effort he gave - that was huge."

The performances off all the big men were huge considering Milton did all it could to take Buccaneer leading scorer Eric Beckstedt out of the game. The sophomore ended up with eight points, but they didn't come easy.

"They played a box-and-one on Eric most of the night," described Craft. "But the other guys took advantage of it and made it work to our advantage. That's why this is a team game."

It was also a complete game for Covington as it shot 43% from the floor (28-for-65), 44% from inside the paint (21-for-47) and made 7-of-18 from behind the arc. The Buccs also limited their turnovers to 12 against a quick and athletic defensive team.

"This was just a great team effort all the way around," Craft said. "Shots fell tonight and our defensive effort was outstanding. They (Milton) are big and athletic and we had to go to a bigger line-up tonight. The kids just played their butts off and the rebounding stats (43-22) are proof of that."

The victory improves Covington's record to 5-8 overall and gives the Buccs some momentum heading into Tuesday's showdown with Mississinawa Valley at Covington High School.
