FEBRUARY 16, 2009 - COVINGTON
For the three Buccaneer seniors there was no better result in the final home game than a thrilling 64-56 overtime victory over Mississinawa Valley on Tuesday.

"This was a good way for the seniors to go out on their home floor - to get a win on 'Senior Night'," said Covington coach Roger Craft of Nate Lavey, Andy Sparks and Kyle Kanet. "Those guys are team players. They've done everything we've asked of them and they're first-class kids."

And each senior had a significant impact on the game by doing what they've done all season long - playing their roles.

"Each one of those guys contributed in their own way," said Craft. "Kyle and Nate each hit big threes for us in the first half and Andy played an all-around solid game scoring, rebounding and playing defense. They do what we ask of them and that's what you expect from your senior leaders."

The trey by Lavey couldn't have come at a better time as Covington had struggled offensively in the first quarter and trailed 16-7 with the Buccs holding the ball for one last shot.

That shot came with Lavey set up behind the three-point-line and the senior hit nothing but net with a defender's hand in his face.

"That was a big shot because we couldn't hit anything early on," Craft explained. "It gave us some momentum offensively and we started getting things going after that."

Which is when Kanet drilled his trey to keep the momentum rolling as the Buccs outscored Mississinawa Valley 14-10 to cut the margin to 26-24 at the half.

"Our defensive effort in the first half kept us in the game," Craft said. "We hit some big shots, but we also missed a lot of easy ones. Our defense kept us in it until we could get going offensively."

Which happened in the third quarter as Covington erupted for 16 points.

Meanwhile, Mississinawa had a difficult time penetrating Covington's zone defense and managed just eight points in the third to make the score 40-34 in the Buccs' favor.

"We went to a bigger line-up than we have in the past and we felt that we would be able to keep things in front of us," explained Craft. "It also helped on the boards, which was huge tonight."

Dominating would be a more accurate term in describing Covington's effort on the boards as the Buccs pulled down a total of 41 rebounds to just 15 for Mississinawa Valley.

Covington also dominated at the offensive end, grabbing 17 boards to just five for the 'Hawks.

And right in the thick of things were Jordy Meyer, Adam Craft and Andy Sparks as the trio combined for 35 of the 41 rebounds.

"Tremendous effort," stated Craft. "Those guys got after it on the boards."

Meyer recorded a double-double by pulling down 18 rebounds and scoring 16 points.

"Jordy Meyer had an outstanding game," Craft praised. "It seemed like every shot that bounced off the rim he was there to get the rebound. If it wasn't him, it was Adam (Craft) or Andy (Sparks). You can't ask for a better effort than that."

Still, Covington found itself in a dog fight as Mississinawa erupted for 16 points in the fourth quarter and sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer with 3 seconds left.

"After they made the three we still got an open look at the end, but couldn't get the shot to fall," Craft described of the final moments of regulation. "But that's basketball. The kids didn't let it bother them and came out aggressive in overtime."

Covington took control of the overtime session from the outset by pushing the lead to 54-50 on two straight possessions.

Mississinawa Valley was forced to foul and the Buccs put the game away at the free throw line.

"We hit some big free throws in the fourth quarter and in the overtime," said Craft.

Covington shot a season-high 37 free throws on the night - many coming as Mississinawa had to foul in an attempt to extend the contest. The Buccs knocked down 26 of those for a free throw percentage of 70%.

The Buccs still struggled from the floor, shooting 36% by making 17-of-46 attempts overall and just 13-of-30 from inside the paint for 43%.

Covington was 4-of-16 from behind the arc for 25%.

"We're still missing some shots we should be making," Craft said. "But we'll take a win any way we can get it."

Mississinawa shot a littler better from the floor as it was 23-of-54 for 42%. The Blackhawks were also 18-of-38 from inside the paint (47%) and 5-of-16 (31% from behind the arc.

The difference in the outcome if you are a Blackhawk fan came at the free throw line as Mississinawa only shot eight free throws and made five.

Covington committed 15 turnovers to just nine for Mississinawa.

But for Covington, the statistic on the scoreboard mattered the most.

"It goes back to our seniors," Craft closed. "The younger kids really wanted to get a win for them. This win on 'Senior Night' meant a lot to all the kids because it was the final home game for our seniors."

The Buccs improve to 8-11 overall and 6-5 in the Cross County Conference with one game left to play at Twin Valley South on Friday.
