JANUARY 17, 2009 - COVINGTON
In each of their previous seven games a pattern has developed for the Covington Buccaneers where the third quarter has become their achilles heal.

That pattern continued Saturday as the Buccs gave New Bremen all it could handle throughout, but a two-for-16 shooting performance in the third period ultimately led to an eighth straight defeat, 59-50.

"I don't know what it is about the third quarter, but it hasn't been good to us that's for sure," said Covington coach Roger Craft in disbelief. "I'm not sure if we're pressing too much or trying too hard. We'll have to look at the film. I do know we burned a lot of timeouts in that quarter to try and get the kids relaxed."

And the Buccs were right where they needed to be at the break, trailing just 25-24.

But a Ben Christian lay-in and an Eric Beckstedt trey was the only two field goals that would fall for the Buccs in the opening frame of the second half. Fortunately for Covington it managed to score seven more points in the third to keep the deficit manageable heading into the final stanza, 42-36.

"Even though we struggled shooting (in the third), we did a good job of getting to the free throw line," Craft explained. "Unfortunately we couldn't get that one or two extra shots to fall for three-point plays."

Covington caught fire in the final frame in a desperate attempt to get back into the game. The team combined to convert on six-of-10 shot attempts and eventually cut the deficit to four, but the clock wasn't on the side of the Buccs.

Forced to foul and send New Bremen to the free throw line prevented Covington from closing the gap further as the Cardinals knocked down free throw after free throw for the nine-point win.

"I'm proud of the kids and the effort they gave," said Craft. "There are no moral victories for us, but we took a step forward against a very good basketball team. We're not far away."

The Buccs were solid in all phases of the game, except for the shooting struggles in the third.

Covington recorded 18 rebounds on the night, eight of those coming on the offensive end. Plus, the Buccs only committed 13 turnovers against a team that applies a lot of pressure on the ball.

And take away the 2-for-16 third period, the Buccs were 16-for-29 from the field in the other three frames.

"They (New Bremen) gave us some problems early with their pressure, but we adjusted pretty quickly and did a pretty good job of taking care of the basketball after the first quarter," said Craft. "We also did a nice job of pounding the boards at the offensive end. That's hustle and effort on our part."

What Craft was most proud of was the effort at the defensive end.

"We were sound defensively," he continued. "They have a lot of size, but we did a good job of matching up and making them work for shots."

Ben Christian had another big night for the Buccs with a team-high 16 points. Eric Beckstedt knocked down 10 points, while Josh Boehringer contributed with eight.

The loss drops Covington's record to 3-8 on the season with a visit to rival Newton next on the schedule on Friday.

"We just have to continue to work to get better," Craft said. "These kids have been working hard and that's what will get us over the hump. Sooner or later good things will start happening for us."

With the way the Buccs have been working - hopefully the good things come sooner rather than later.
