FEBRUARY 20, 2009 - WEST ALEXANDRIA
When your team shoots a season-high 61% from the floor, makes eight three-pointers, and out-rebounds the opponent 21-15, you'd expect a win going away.
But for the Covington Buccaneers, the victory slipped through their grasp in the waning moments as Twin Valley South erased an 15-point second half deficit to take a 52-49 win.
"This (the loss) is disappointing because we shot the ball very well tonight - well enough to get a win," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "But we didn't get the ball down the floor to get shots off in the fourth quarter when we needed them."
For Covington fans who made the trip south, the feeling was the Buccs didn't get any breaks - especially in the fourth quarter.
But Craft felt his team needed to make its own breaks.
"We had six of our 11 turnovers in the fourth quarter," he explained. "You can't have that and expect to put a team away. Plus, we shot 1-for-4 from the free throw line in the third quarter and 2-for-4 in the fourth quarter. You need to make free throws if you expect to put teams away. We just didn't put them away when we had them down."
And Covington built a big lead thanks to some hot shooting in the first half as Covington had six first half treys. Eric Beckstedt connected on five of his six treys in the first half and finished with a game-high 22 points.
"Eric was in a zone," Craft said. "We needed to get him the ball more in the second half and we didn't. A lot of that was because they played a box-and-one on him, but that should open up some other things."
Which it did as Covington pounded the ball inside in the second half, but was limited in the fourth quarter as Ben Christian fouled out on a charge.
"That hurt," Craft said. "Still, we had opportunities to put the game away and didn't do it."
Which was a credit to the grittiness of Twin Valley South as it captured the momentum by closing the gap to 41-32 at the end of the third after Covington built a 40-25 lead midway through the frame.
"Give them credit," Craft praised. "They did what they had to do to get back into the game. They pressured us in the backcourt and forced us into some turnovers."
And the Panthers started to connect on some threes, which Covington took away from the home team for three quarters.
"They average over 30 three-point attempts per game," said Craft. "We did a good job of contesting their shots and our guards were able to get some long rebounds. But they are streaky and once they start hitting them you have to weather the storm by taking advantage of the long rebounds and pushing it up the floor."
Which is something Covington struggled with as the game progressed as the Buccs committed six costly turnovers in the fourth quarter alone.
"We really missed Jake Bitner tonight," stated Craft of his sophomore guard who was in street clothes due to injury. "He's pretty good at beating the pressure and we missed that tonight."
Still, Covington will look back at the simplest aspect of the game and realize it let one slip away.
"Free throws," Craft said. "We were 3-of-10 for the game and that cost us. As well as we shot the ball from the floor, you can't shoot 3-for-10 from the free throw line and expect to win."
Which ultimately cost Covington as it's record drops to 8-12 overall and 6-6 in the Cross County Conference.
The Buccs begin sectional tournament play next Saturday at Piqua High School against Bradford.
