JANUARY 16, 2009 - COVINGTON
For the first time since December 12th the Covington Buccaneers took to their home floor looking to end a six-game losing streak against a Tri-Village team coming off a narrow five-point loss to unbeaten and conference leader Miami East.
Unfortunately for the Buccs, a dormant offensive showing for much of the third period was all Tri-Village needed to hand the home team its seventh straight defeat, 54-50.
"We always seem to have a stretch in a game where we can't hit shots - easy shots," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "The third quarter tonight was that stretch for us. We just can't have inconsistent play and expect to win against good teams like Tri-Village."
The visiting Patriots took a 24-23 halftime lead and extended it to 40-32 at the end of the third thanks to Covington's cold shooting.
"Tri-Village is a nice team," Craft praised. "The Greer kid is good and the Moore kid is a darn good shooter as a sophomore. They don't have the size they've had in the past, but Coach Sagaster does a great job with what he has."
Tyler Greer and Drew Moore paced the Patriots with 20 and 11 points respectively, but Covington had it's own offensive weapons to challenge Tri-Village down the stretch after the visitors increased the lead to 46-36 midway through the final frame.
Sophomore Eric Beckstedt and junior Ben Christian responded by leading the Buccs on an 11-4 run to cut the margin to 50-47 with under 2:00 to play.
"Benny (Christian) is playing pretty well right now," Craft said. "He got into some foul trouble, but he had another good night scoring. We just need more guys to step up with him and Eric offensively."
A three point lead for Tri-Village is a significant lead, especially with the clock ticking away.
The Patriots spread the floor with their three outstanding guards in Moore, Greer and Heath West, making Covington come out and foul.
This resulted in four straight free throws for the visitors to increase the margin to 54-47 with under a minute to go.
"We were scrappy to get back into the game after being down by ten," Craft explained. "The kids never stopped playing."
The scrappiness of the Buccs continued as sophomore Josh Boehringer drilled a trey with 37 seconds left to cut the margin to 54-50.
Tri-Village then missed on two free throws, giving Covington the ball back with under 10 seconds left.
But the Buccs misfired on two straight attempts from behind the arc as the buzzer went off with the scoreboard showcasing a Tri-Village victory.
"It comes down to us not making the shots when we need them," said Craft. "It's not a lack of effort. The kids are giving everything they've got in preparation and in the games. We're just not consistent shooting the basketball."
The statistics back up Craft's assessment as the Buccs shot 39% from the floor on a 16 of 41 shooting night. Covington also struggled once again inside the paint by making just 10 of 27 for 37%
The Buccs were 6 of 14 from behind the arc for 32% and 12-for-20 from the free throw line for 60%
Tri-Village shot 47% from the field, making 17 of 36. The Patriots were even better inside the paint, making 13 of 24 shots for 54%.
The visitors connected on 4 of 12 from behind the arc for 33% and 16 of 23 from the free throw line for 69%.
The rebounding totals were virtually even as Tri-Village pulled down 19 boards to 18 for Covington. The Buccs did hold an advantage in offensive rebounds, 11-7.
Both teams committed 12 turnovers on the evening.
The loss drops Covington's record to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in the CCC, while Tri-Village improves to 8-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play.
Covington looks to capture that ever elusive fourth win tomorrow night as New Bremen comes to town.
