One Of Those Nights...
Nate Lavey and the Buccs had one of those nights where shots would not fall and the result was a 47-26 loss to Versailles.

DECEMBER 13, 2008 - VERSAILLES
It was a battle between two teams without a blemish on their early season records as the Versailles Tigers played host to the Covington Buccaneers, Saturday.

And after four quarters of play the scoreboard told the entire story as Versailles controlled the action throughout en route to a 45-27 victory.

"This just wasn't our night," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "It wasn't a lack of effort. When you hold a team like Versailles to 47 points you'd think you'd have a pretty good chance of winning."

But Covington couldn't put the ball in the basket, which is an understatement considering the Buccs only made 2 of 14 first half field goals and just 10 for 41 for the game.

"We were totally out of sync," Craft continued. "Shots weren't falling, we had trouble handling passes - I mean, it was just one of those nights. No matter what level of basketball you are at teams have nights like this."

A lot of Covington's woes can be attributed to the relentless attack of the Tigers at both ends of the floor.

Versailles didn't shoot the lights out, but it pressured Covington into 13 first half turnovers and built a comfortable 20-5 lead at the break.

"Their quickness was a big factor," Craft explained. "We didn't handle their defensive pressure very well and their quickness had a lot to do with that."

The Tigers seemed quicker in every phase of the game and it was a key reason Versailles held an advantage on the boards as well. Versailles pulled down 28 rebounds to Covington's 20.

"We have to do a better job executing the fundamentals," Craft said. "They seemed to beat us to every ball, whether it was a loose ball or a rebound."

The trend continued in the third quarter as Versailles outscored the Buccs 18-8 in the period.

"I felt, even as poorly as the first half went, that we were still very much in the game at the half," said Craft. "We were playing hard, but we needed to be more patient and take care of the basketball."

It was too late to salvage victory, but the Buccs found the flow they were looking for in the fourth quarter.

The result was 13 points, a total that matched the previous three quarters of offensive production.

"That's a credit to the kids that they continued to play hard until the end," said Craft. "I know they were frustrated, but they kept their composure and continued to play."

Versailles converted on 20 of 44 attempts from the floor and connected on 5 of 8 free throws.

Clayton Nieport led the Tigers with a game-high 11 points, while Patrick Mesciter scored 10. Damien Winner added 8 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Covington was led in scoring by Ben Christian with 10 points, while Josh Boehringer pulled down 7 rebounds for the Buccs.

The Tiger improve to 3-0 on the season, while Covington drops to 3-1.

"We'll put this behind us and come in on Monday and work on handling the pressure," Craft concluded. "These kids are a hard-working group and they'll be ready to prepare for Miami East."

Which takes place on Tuesday at Miami East.
