JANUARY 8, 2010 - COVINGTON
With the beef Covington has on the roster, it's no secret the Buccs love to pound the ball inside and wear down opposing teams with their strength and aggressiveness.
It's not flashy, but it's a style of play in which Covington thrives on - which Ansonia found out first hand Friday night as the Buccs outscored the Tigers 24-10 inside the paint and held a 36-19 rebounding advantage in a 55-38 victory.
"We knew going into the game that we could control the game inside if we could handle their (Ansonia's) pressure," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "It was a post player's night and our guards did a good job of finding them."
And post players Jordy Meyer, Josh Boehringer, Ben Christian and Cole Owens had big nights for the Buccs.
Meyer led all scorers with 24 points and 3 blocked shots, while Josh Boehringer grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with his 7 points.
"Jordy had a great night," Craft praised. "He was aggressive taking the ball to the basket and played very well at the defensive end. Boehringer had 11 rebounds and Cole (Owens) came off the bench with 7 rebounds. We got 27 rebounds out of our post players."
Thirteen of those rebounds came at the offensive end.
"That's huge," said Craft. "Anytime you can give yourself that many second chances at points, it's huge."
Covington stormed out to a 14-4 lead after one quarter of play and held a 24-12 lead at the break.
The 12-point margin remained through three quarters, but Ansonia caught fire and cut the deficit to under 10 early in the fourth quarter on a three-pointer by Kyle Young.
But Covington received a huge break as Ansonia's Jordan Liette was called for a foul and then received two straight technical fouls pleading his case with the official.
Jordy Meyer went to the free throw line and buried all six free throws and the Buccs scored on the ensuing possession to push the lead to 18.
From there it was all Covington at the free throw line as the Buccs connected on 13 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter to take the 17-point win.
In all, Covington made 22 of 32 free throws on the evening.
"That helps (in putting a team away)," said Craft. "When you can convert at the free throw line it makes it difficult for teams to get back into the game. We did an outstanding job of getting to the free throw line tonight."
Covington's defensive effort was stellar as well. The Buccs held Ansonia to just 13 field goals on 44 attempts for 29%.
"We're very proud of our effort defensively," Craft said. "We've been working hard on putting pressure on the ball. Ansonia's a quick team, but I thought we did very well getting out and contesting shots. We took a step forward defensively."
One stat Craft isn't pleased with came in the form of turnovers as the Buccs gave the ball away 19 times.
"We had some silly turnovers," he said. "They (Ansonia) were running around, trapping us, and with their quickness they can force you into some turnovers. But a lot of our turnovers were silly mistakes. We have to do a much better job of taking care of the basketball."
Still, the difference in the game was the physical advantage the Buccs enjoyed inside the paint.
It's what Covington thrives on.
