FEBRUARY 12, 2010 - COVINGTON
The statistics tell the story of Covington's struggles Friday night in a 46-44 loss to Arcanum as the Buccs shot just 33% (17-51) from the field and were out rebounded 31-28 on their home floor.
"It comes down to missed shots inside the paint and we got out hustled on the boards," said a displeased Covington coach, Roger Craft. "With this group of kids we have, that's very disappointing."
Because the Buccs once again had an advantage in strength with its interior lineup.
"With our strength we need to finish shots, especially that close to the basket" Craft continued. "I don't know how much closer we can get the ball to the basket. We just need to find a way to finish."
Arcanum wasn't much better shooting the ball as it only converted on 17 of 50 field goals for 34%.
But the Trojans made six straight free throws in the final minutes to seal the victory.
"You never want to put yourself in a position where you have to rely on them to miss free throws," Craft explained. "We put ourselves into that position tonight and to their credit they made the shots when they needed them."
The game was close throughout as the largest lead of the contest was 34-27 and that was at the end of the third period.
But the combined 15 points Covington tallied in the second and third quarters may have been its downfall considering Jordy Meyer spent most of the two quarters on the bench with three fouls.
"That (having Meyer on the bench) hurt, but it's not like we don't have more beef to come in and take his spot," Craft said.
Meyer still managed 14 points and 8 rebounds. In all, 38 of the Buccs' 44 points came from three players as Eric Beckstedt knocked down 14 and Adam Craft scored 10 to go along with Meyer's offensive production.
The rest of Covington's roster could only contribute a total of six points - four of those coming from the free throw line.
"As a team we are a little hesitant to pull the trigger (on shots)," said Craft. "At this point in the season we should be playing with a little more confidence considering the experience we have."
Covington made a valiant effort to capture a come-from-behind victory in the fourth quarter as it cut the Arcanum lead to 46-44 and had the ball with under 20 seconds to play.
But the Trojans had four fouls to give and used them up in bunches to prevent the Buccs from getting an open look.
"We knew they were going to foul us at the end," said Craft. "We wanted to attack the basket and hopefully get a basket and the foul."
The strategy nearly worked, but one final missed opportunity from three feet away from the basket ended the Buccs' hopes with 7 second left.
Which ends all chances of a shared conference title for the Buccs as they drop to 9-8 on the season an 6-3 in the CCC.
Arcanum improves to 10-6 overall and 7-2 in league play.
"This was a game where on team stayed in the hunt and the other team took a step back," Craft said. "Unfortunately it was us who took a step backward tonight."
Which leaves Covington looking to get back on track for the upcoming tournament.
"We have three games to get it together," Craft closed. "We'll find out what these kids are made of."
To get it together the Buccs will need to find a way to take advantage of shots inside the paint and control the boards - two aspects of the game that was considered a strength of the team heading into the season.
