DECEMBER 22, 2009 - BRANDT
Missed opportunities inside the paint cost the Covington Buccaneers in a 48-45 loss at Bethel on Tuesday night in an early season showdown with huge Cross County Conference implications.

"Those opportunities inside the paint - we need to take advantage of on the road," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "They (Bethel) won the inside game tonight and that's an area we needed to win."

The Buccs had battled back from an early 14-5 deficit to take a 29-25 lead at the half.

The four-point margin remained through the third quarter, but Covington had every opportunity to extend the margin to double digits - only if it would have converted on several shots from right under the basket.

"We definitely had our chances to go up by 10 or 12 in the third, but didn't convert when we got the ball inside the paint," Craft explained. "They (Bethel) were packed inside pretty tight making it difficult to get the ball in there, so when we did get inside we needed to convert."

Covington only managed 12 points inside the paint throughout the entire contest, while Bethel scored 22.

Bethel also went to the free throw line much more often than Covington. The Bees were 11-for-21 on the game and 10-for-18 in the second half, while Covington only shot one free throw in the second half and was 4-for-5 for the contest.

"That (not getting to the free throw line) concerns me," said Craft. "That's our game, pounding the ball inside and either getting high percentage shots or getting to the free throw line. We didn't do that tonight."

Much of that was due to the zone defense Bethel implemented in order to contain Covington's strength under the basket.

"Give them (Bethel) credit. They packed it in pretty tight and made us work to get it inside," Craft praised. "We needed to do a better job of converting when we got it in there."

Covington managed to loosen up Bethel's defense with outstanding shooting from the outside, particularly in the first half. The Buccs canned six first half treys, five coming from Eric Beckstedt, who ended up with 21 points on seven treys for the game.

"We hit some big shots from the outside tonight," said Craft. "Eric (Beckstedt) is capable of that on any given night."

After the big first half by Beckstedt, Bethel had Jon Sutton shadow him the rest of the evening, making it difficult for the Buccaneer sharp shoot to even get the ball into his hands.

All the while Scott Mason came through with a big night for the Bees scoring 19 points and pulling down 10 rebounds to record the double-double.

"Mason had a big game for them," Craft said. "We didn't do a very good job of keeping him off the boards. Six of his rebounds came at the offensive end and some of those were on missed free throws in the fourth quarter. We didn't box out very well tonight."

Bethel held the advantage on the boards 21-16 overall and 7-6 at the offensive end.

Plus, the Bees shot 59% from the floor (17-29), while Covington shot for 42% (16-38).

The Buccs also committed 17 fouls to just 7 for Bethel, which resulted in a huge free throw advantage for the Bees.

"We got out of position at times defensively," said Craft. "Give Bethel credit. They have some quickness at the guard position and they have some nice post players."

Still, it all came down to missed opportunities for the Buccs.

"But we had our chances to win this game in the second half," Craft continued. "We just didn't convert when we needed to."

The loss drops Covington to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the CCC, while Bethel improves to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in league play.
