FEBRUARY 20, 2010 - BRADFORD
In a battle between neighboring rivals, the Covington Buccaneers traveled to Bradford and cruised to a 51-24 victory to improve to 11-8 overall and 8-3 in the Cross County Conference.
Bradford drops to 6-12 and 3-8 in the CCC.
Covington took control early with an 11-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 26-8 advantage at the half.
Bradford responded in the third quarter by outscoring Covington 12-7 to close the gap to 33-20, but the visiting Buccaneers put the game away in the final frame by dominating 18-4 for the 27-point victory.
Covington connected on 16 of 34 of its field goals for 47% and shot 3-for-5 from behind the arc for 60%. The Buccs were also 16 of 19 from the free throw line for 84%.
Bradford made just 8 of 30 from the floor for 27% and were 0-for-2 from three-point range. The Railroaders made 8 of 15 free throws for 53%.
The Buccaneers controlled the game inside the paint by outscoring Bradford 18-8 and dominated the boards 22-12. Covington also held the advantage off the bench, receiving 15 points from its bench players to none for Bradford.
The turnover margin was also in Covington's favor as the Buccs only committed 8 turnovers to 14 for Bradford.
Eight players on the Covington roster reached the scoring column with Jordy Meyer leading all scorers with a game-high 13 points. Adam Craft knocked down 11 points, while freshman Cole Owens pulled down a game-high 6 rebounds.
Bradford had five players score with Douglas Canan leading the way with 8 points and Daniel Phillips dropping in 6 points.
Covington closes out the regular season on Monday at Tri-County North, while Bradford hosts Mississinawa Valley the same evening and then finishes against Sidney Christian Academy on Tuesday.
The two squads then square up for a rematch next Saturday in the opening round of the sectional tournament at Piqua High School.
