FEBRUARY 27, 2010 - PIQUA
Covington and Bradford go way back - back where grandparents of the kids today played against one another in virtually all athletic activities.
So it wasn't a surprise that Saturday basketball contest in the sectional tournament turned into a physical affair between the neighboring rivals.
"They (Bradford) were getting after it," praised Covington coach Roger Craft of the Railroaders. "They played with a lot of effort and I give them all the credit in the world for how hard they played. That's what this (the rivalry) is all about."
Covington got after it too as the Buccs dominated inside the paint, scoring 38 points from close range to just 14 for Bradford.
That was the difference in a 60-33 victory for the Buccs.
"That's what it's going to take for us," said Craft in regards to scoring inside the paint. "The game plane was to get the ball inside for high percentage shots and if it wasn't there to kick it back outside. It's a credit to our kids for finishing shots inside."
And the Buccs did it all without the big inside presence of senior Jordy Meyer, who watched from the bench while suffering from illness.
"We had some other guys step up," Craft said. "Benny (Christian) and Cole (Owens) had big games for us. There were a couple of times they (Bradford) cut into our lead and Cole got us over the hump with some big shots."
Two of those shots by Owens were from behind the arc, once in the third quarter and another early in the fourth quarter.
Both times Bradford had put together nice runs.
"Cole can shoot," Craft continued. "He also made some nice passes inside and that's a sign of an unselfish player. The kids were very unselfish tonight."
Another player who was unselfish was Martin Leistner. The junior recorded nine points and three assists, all while beating the defensive pressure applied by Bradford.
"Martin was tired after the game, that's for sure," said Craft. "He got us into our offensive sets and did a good job of controlling the tempo. He did the majority of the work beating their press."
Covington built a 19-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Bradford gave as good as it got in the second quarter - only allowing Covington a 14-12 advantage in the frame.
The Railroaders then played the Buccs even in the third 10-8 to trail 43-26 after three quarters of play.
And it was Phillip Jones who hit big shots to keep the Railroaders within stroking distance as the senior ended with with a game-high 20 points.
But Covington had too much size and strength inside as Owens and Christian took over the final frame to spark the Buccs to a 17-7 advantage in the frame and a 60-33 win.
"The good thing about this is we had several players step up," Craft said. "Adam (Craft) had a good night and Ben and Cole made plays when we had (Josh) Boehringer in foul trouble. And Martin played a whale of a game."
Craft led Covington with 18 points, while Christian had 12 points and Owens had 10.
Covington shot 54.5% from the floor (24-44) and 8-12 from the free throw line, while Bradford was 12-46 from the floor for 26.% and 9-14 from the free throw line.
The Buccs held a slim edge on the boards 23-21 and in turnover margin 14-13.
And at the end of the day Covington moves on to play Lehman on Wednesday at 7:30pm.
