Covington cheerleading advisor Gretchen Schmidt is excited about the upcoming basketball season - and with good reason. Schmidt's squad is one of the most athletic groups she's had from top to bottom in some time.
"This is a very athletic group of girls," said Schmidt. "We have more tumblers this year and that's going to allow us to do more exciting routines. I'm very excited."
Much of the athleticism comes from the fact that the majority of the teams participates in multiple sports.
"A lot of the girls play other sports, so they're pretty well rounded athletes," Schmidt said. "We have volleyball players, basketball players, softball players - you name it."
Schmidt also has senior leadership with the return of Alyssa Angle, Mackenzie Richards, Eric Waterfall and Marissa McGillvary.
"All four of those girls have cheered for a while, so they can help coach the younger kids," Schmidt said of the seniors. "That helps me out a lot."
Joining the seniors on the varsity squad are Raquel Brant, Josselyn Tobias, Lacey Hagen and freshman Haleigh Murphy.
The junior varsity squad consists of Macy Boehringer, Taylor Angle, Emily Henry, Heidi Snipes, Tara Snipes, Brooke Selanders, Danielle Hatcher and Bethany Richards.
