DECEMBER 5, 2009 - FAIRLAWN
It wasn't a pretty win, but a win Roger Craft and the Covington Buccaneers will take any day - especially after getting a late start to basketball practice due to the football team playing two weeks into the state playoffs.

"With the limited number of practices we've had, I'm pleased with our overall performance tonight," said Craft after his team went on the road to claim a 66-46 victory over Fairlawn on Saturday. "Sure, there are some things we could do better, but we played pretty well considering the circumstances."

Two areas Craft will look to shore up in practice are turnovers and rebounding at the offensive end. The Buccs turned the ball over 14 times and allowed 15 offensive rebounds to Fairlawn - despite holding a 36-29 advantage on overall rebounds.

"With the type of game this was and the way they (Fairlawn) were playing defensively, 14 turnovers isn't too bad," Craft explained. "But we could still be better at protecting the basketball. I'm more concerned about our rebounding at the offensive end because a lot of their offensive boards came off of missed free throws."

And Fairlawn had a lot of missed free throws as it only converted on 12 of 30 attempts from the charity stripe - seven of those coming on the front end of a one-and-one.

"That (Fairlawn's 40% free throws shooting) worked in our favor," said Craft. "If they make their free throws, we're in a tight game."

The Buccaneers are known as a physical team, but many of the 26 fouls blown could have led to frustration for a more inexperienced group - especially when two of your stronger players fouled out in the contest.

"We had some calls that didn't go our way, but that happens," Craft said. "Ben (Christian) and Jordy (Meyer) fouled out, but the kids did a good job of keeping their composure and continuing to play basketball. It was big for us to keep our cool."

Josh Boehringer, Adam Craft and Eric Beckstedt also found themselves in foul trouble, which tested the resolve of Covington's bench players.

"Our bench players came up big tonight," Craft stated. "Martin (Leistner), Cole (Owens), Garrett (Sprankle) and Tyler (Noffsinger) all came off the bench and played very well. Our depth was a big key tonight."

With Adam Craft sitting on the bench with four fouls, Leistner came in and scored 10 points.

"Tremendous game for him (Leistner)," praised Craft. "He's been very consistent over the summer and in practice and it carried over into the game."

The Buccaneers had four players score in double digits with Eric Beckstedt leading the way with a game-high 20 points. Jordy Meyer scored 12, while Christian and Leistner each dropped in ten.

"Jordy and Ben made some big shots inside tonight," said Craft. "We shot the ball very well inside the paint and that opens everything else up for us."

The 17-for-33 effort inside the paint for the Buccs led to a combined seven treys by Beckstedt, Meyer and Christian.

Covington, as a team, shot 53% from floor (24-for-45) and 68% from the free throw line (11-for-16). The Buccs also shot a respectable 39% from behind the arc (11-16).

"This was a nice team effort where everyone contributed," Craft said. "It was a night where we got into some foul trouble and had several kids step up and make plays. We rallied as a team and that's nice to see in your first time out."

It wasn't pretty, but a win on opening night is the best way to start a season.
