JANUARY 29, 2010 - COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers hosted Franklin Monroe in a key Cross County Conference (CCC) contest riding a two-game winning streak. The Buccs were looking to keep the offensive momentum rolling and maintain their defensive effort that had led to 8 wins in 13 contests.

The early going was a back-and-forth affair as the Buccs managed a 13-10 lead after one quarter of play.

But in the second period, the Buccs started to assert their physical dominance, often coming up with second and third offensive chances as they slowly started to edge away from the Jets.

Meanwhile, the defensive pressure by Covington made it difficult for Franklin Monroe to hit shots as the visitors only scored five points in the period leading to a 26-15 advantage for the Buccs at the half.

In the third frame the Buccs got a couple of quick scores inside while Franklin Mornoe tried to answer with five straight points.

Covington then started to heat up from the outside hitting three triples as they went on to claim a 41-28 lead.

The physical style of play by Covington put Franklin Monroe into the double bonus near the end of the third frame but the Jets were unable to take advantage as they really couldn’t control the paint even though they shot 18 more free throws then the Buccs.

Covington would go on to score 20 points in the final stanza on their way to a 61-43 conference win.

The Buccs would have three players reach double figures with Eric Beckstedt leading the way with a game-high 16 points. Jordy Meyer and Ben Christian made hay inside the paint with 13 and 11 points respectively, while Adam Craft and Josh Boerhinger each had 8 points.

The victory improves Covington to 9-5 on the season and 6-2 in the conference. The Buccs host Anna tomorrow night in a non-conference contest.
