DECEMBER 29, 2009 - PIQUA
The Covington Buccaneers had their hands full after a horrendous second quarter against Lehman in the opening game of the second annual holiday tournament at Piqua High School on Tuesday. The Cavaliers, who won the tournament last year, had just outscored the Buccs 18-6 in the second frame to take a 31-25 lead at the break and Covington was in need of a serious lift.
And Adam Craft stepped up to the challenge.
The senior point guard put the game on his shoulders and led the Buccs to a 65-63 victory with a career-high 30 points and game-high 10 rebounds. Craft shot 11-for-13 from the floor for 85% and made 8 of 12 free throws, including 7 of 9 in the fourth quarter.
"Adam's a senior who stepped up, which is what you expect from your seniors," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "Their (Lehman's) defense was so spread out, we told him (Craft) to take it as far as he could and he made some plays. He played very well at both ends of the floor tonight."
Covington won the game down the stretch at the free throw line as Lehman fouled every chance it had in order to extend the contest. The Buccs connected on 12 of 15 free throws in the final frame and shot 14 for 22 for the game.
"Free throw shooting is huge, especially in the fourth quarter in a tight game like this one," said Craft.
One of the missed free throws was a big one for Covington - and it couldn't have come at a better time.
With 4 seconds left Jordy Meyer made the first of two attempts and then bounced the second one off the back of the rim in what appeared to be an intentional miss. Regardless of whether it was missed on purpose or not, it forced Lehman to rush a final desperation shot from over half court.
"I'm not sure if he (Meyer) missed that free throw on purpose, but I'm glad he did," Craft explained. "It took time off the clock for them to get a rebound and look down the floor to set up a shot. If Jordy made that free throw they would have had time to throw a long pass and set up a better shot than the one they got."
Meyer played heads-up basketball all night as he contributed with 15 points and six rebounds, two of those rebounds resulting in stick backs off of missed free throws.
"Those put backs by Jordy were huge," Craft said. "You'd like to make all the free throws, but anytime you can get a rebound off of a missed free throw and convert it into points, it's huge."
The game started out as a high scoring affair as Covington jumped out to a 19-13 lead in the first quarter.
But the Buccs couldn't buy a basket in the second quarter as Lehman outscored Covington 18-2 to take a 31-21 lead with under 1:00 left in the half. The Buccs managed to score the final two baskets of the half to close the gap to 31-25.
"We missed a lot of easy shots in the second quarter," Craft explained. "We didn't convert inside the paint very well and we had some turnovers that resulted in lay-ups at the other end. They (Lehman) definitely had the momentum."
The momentum switched to Covington's side of the court in the second half as Adam Craft took over the game. If he wasn't scoring, he was making a nice pass or playing solid defense.
He was also protecting the basketball as evident by his limited number of turnovers - just 3 throughout the contest.
"We did a better job of taking care of the basketball tonight than we did last week," said Craft. "We still had some turnovers due to poor decisions."
It all resulted in a hard-fought victory and a date with Russia (who beat Piqua) tomorrow night in the finals.
"That's going to be a barn burner," Craft said. "Russia is a good basketball team who is very well coached. It should be a good one."
If it's anything like tonight, the fans will get their money's worth while Craft will be stressing on the sideline.
"I'm sure this was an exciting game for the fans to watch, but it wears old guys like me out," Craft said. "But that's what makes playing in a tournament atmosphere so exciting."
