Rob Kiser - Piqua Daily Call
FEBRUARY 2, 2010 - COVINGTON
Covington boys basketball coach Roger Craft knew exactly what to expect when Marion Local came to town Tuesday night.

And the Flyers did not disappoint, winning a physical battle with Covington 44-39.

"That was a slugfest, wasn't it," Craft said as he emerged from the Buccs locker room.

And Covington traded punches with Marion Local despite being without 6-2 junior post Josh Boehringer, who has an ankle injury.

"He is our most physical player," Craft said. "This (Marion Local) is his kind of game. This is definitely not a game we would want to be without him."

And in a game dominated by defenses through the first three quarters, there was little separation in the score.

While Covington never led, the Buccs never trailed by more than five until midway through the fourth quarter. The Flyers led 7-6 after one quarter and it was tied at 13 at the break.

When a rebound got away from Marion Local on a Covington miss late in the third quarter, Adam Craft corralled the ball and was fouled. He hit both free throws to get the Buccs within 23-21 with 1:08 remaining in the quarter.

"We didn't (score a lot of points in the first three quarters)," Craft said. "But, neither did they (Marion Local). I think so (it had to do with the strong defense being played by both teams)."

But, in a game where points were at a premium, Covington couldn't dent the scoreboard again until a basket by Ben Christian with 4:00 remaining in the game. By then, theFlyers had run off nine straight points to take a 32-21 lead.

"It is tough to come back from that (a double digit deficit) in a game like this were every possession seems so important," Craft said. "But, just like I knew they would, our kids did. There is no quit in them."

Adam Craft was able to get to the rim for eight points in the fourth quarter. And when Eric Beckstedt hit two free throws with 1:09 remaining, the Buccs were within 35-29.

Covington was able to get a quick steal and Christian's 3-point attempt to make it 35-32 at the 1:00 mark seemed to be dead center before spinning back out.

"That would have gotten us within three," Craft said. "It seemed like the ball was halfway down. That would have been a big basket."

But, there was no breaking Covington's spirit. They played hard right to Martin Leistner's half-court bomb at the buzzer to make the final score 44-39.

"There is no quit in these kids," Craft said.

As usual Craft filled the stat sheet to lead Covington. He had 14 points, seven rebounds, three steals and an assist. Jordy Meyer grabbed five rebounds.

Brian Heitkamp had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead Marion Local.

Covington was 16 of 40 from the floor for 40 percent, but just one of 13 from 3-point range. The Buccs converted six of nine free throws for 67 percent.

Marion Local was 14 of 33 from the floor for 42 percent, including three of eight from 3-point range. The Flyers converted 13 of 21 free throws for 62 percent.

Covington outscored the Flyers in the paint 22-14, but Marion Local's bench outpointed the Buccs 14-7.

Marion Local won the battle of the boards 22-20 and had 13 turnovers to Covington's 10.

Covington will travel to Bradford Friday in CCC action.

"We just have to eliminate those long stretches without scoring," Craft said.

Especially, if you want to win a slugfest.
