Down, But Not Out...
Jordy Meyer, Josh Boehringer and the Buccs are finding the going tough right now, but the character on the roster will lead to better things in the near future.
It's not often Eric Beckstedt goes without a field goal, but it happened Saturday night as the Buccs continue to struggle shooting the basketball.

JANUARY 16, 2010 - NEW BREMEN
When the objective of the game is putting the ball in the basket, a shooting slump is the most frustrating thing for a basketball team. It can make a team lose its confidence and leads to frustration and disappointment.

And a shooting slump is what the Covington Buccaneers are battling through at the midway point of the season. It has led to three straight games in which Covington has scored less than 50 points and two straight losses, including a 52-33 loss at New Bremen on Saturday.

The 33 points for the Buccs was their lowest scoring output since January 3rd of last season against Russia.

"Our shooting woes continue," said Covington coach Roger Craft with a tone of concern for his players in his voice. "It's just one of those things our kids are battling through."

The statistics are proof of Covington's struggles at it converted on 13 of 49 field goals for 26% and made just one of 14 attempts from behind the arc for 7%.

And its wasn't like Covington was forcing shots.

"Our shot selection was pretty good overall," Craft explained. "We got a lot of shots off and had some good looks at the basket."

The zone defense New Bremen played was something Craft hoped would benefit the Buccs in finding their groove offensively.

"Something I thought we wouldn't see tonight was a zone," he said. "We played a lot of zone teams earlier in the year and took advantage of it by knocking down shots. We did a good job of finding open looks against them, but we didn't knock down the shots."

New Bremen didn't exactly torch the nets either, but it shot well enough to take a 14-9 lead after one quarter of play and extend the margin to 28-17 at the break.

An 11-4 advantage in the third period increased the margin to 39-21 as Covington started showing its frustration at the defensive end. It led to an early exit by senior post player Jordy Meyer, who fouled out late in the third quarter and a total of 20 team fouls for Covington, while New Bremen had just 7.

"We played pretty well defensively until the second half," Craft said. "We started to show our frustration."

Despite falling to 6-5 on the season, Craft feels his team will find a way to get battle through the adversity and become a better basketball team for it.

"The thing about this (the shooting slump) is we have good kids who will come back into the gym and work even harder to get better," he stated. "We'll find some positives from this."

The one positive through it all is the Buccs continue to play hard from start to finish every night out. That's evident by the 31-29 rebounding advantage for the Buccs against a much taller New Bremen squad.

"The kids are playing hard," Craft said. "They are doing everything we ask. It all comes down to shooting."

The Buccs have a few days to work out the kinks before hosting Newton on Friday in a huge Cross County Conference match-up.
