JANUARY 22, 2010 - COVINGTON
The last two weeks have seemed like an eternity for the Covington Buccaneers as the entire team fell victim to a shooting slump. In the three-game span the Buccs managed to score just 41, 42 and 33 points in losing two of the three contests.
"When you are in that situation (a shooting slump) you just have to play through it," said Covington coach Roger Craft.
Which makes the 76-point outburst against rival Newton very gratifying, especially considering the Buccs captured the win 76-53.
"That's exactly what we needed," Craft continued in regards to his squad's offensive performance. "It was nice to see us get going offensively."
One player in particular needed a breakout game - junior sharp shooter Eric Beckstedt.
"It was nice to see E get going," said Craft of Beckstedt, who tallied 18 points on the evening. "He hit some big shots early and I think that helped him relax a little bit and become comfortable with his shot."
Beckstedt misfired on his first two shot attempts, but continued to fire away while being left all alone behind the arc. It resulted in three first period treys that sparked a 15-8 Buccaneer lead after one quarter of play.
"We hit some shots from the perimeter tonight and that only opens up our inside game," Craft explained. "We were able to pound the ball inside - and with our strength we were able to take over the game."
Covington outscored Newton 40-14 inside the paint and held a huge advantage on the boards, 40-24. The Buccs also dominated the offensive glass, 14-6.
"Rebounding and points in the paint was the difference in the game," said Craft. "We were the physically stronger team."
Still, Newton kept the game manageable for much of the second quarter as it cut the margin to 23-18 with less than 2:00 left in the half.
But Covington scored the final six points of the half - four of those coming in the final 30 seconds - for a 29-18 halftime lead.
"Those two baskets right before the half were huge," said Craft.
Because Covington had the momentum, which led to a 25-point outburst in the third quarter to push the Buccaneer lead to 54-35 with one quarter to play.
"We got off to a good start to the second half and we continued to pick up momentum," Craft said. "The kids did a good job of keeping the pressure on."
The Buccs pushed the lead to 30 points midway through the fourth quarter, so Craft emptied his bench.
"It was good to see a lot of our guys get some playing time," said Craft. "We have a lot of kids on the roster and they all contribute in their own way."
One of those players is senior Garrett Clark, who capped the evening with a layup that brought the Covington faithful to its feet.
"Garrett is one of those kids who works very hard all the time and sets a positive example for the other kids," Craft praised. "I know its tough sometimes for a senior who doesn't see a lot of playing time, but he just goes about his business and does what's best for the team."
In all, ten Buccaneer players reached the scoring column with Beckstedt and Adam Craft leading all players with 18 points each.
Jordy Meyer had another stellar evening as well with 13 points, while Martin Leistner had 9 and Josh Boehringer scored 8 points.
Covington connected on 27 of 61 from the floor for 44%, 5-for-22 from behind the arc for 23% and 17-for-24 from the free throw line for 71%.
The Buccs had 14 more shot attempts than the visitors as Newton was 16-for-47 from the field for 34%, 5-for-13 from three-point land for 38% and 16-for-26 from the free throw line for 62%.
Both teams has issues taking care of the basketball as there were a combined 32 turnovers in the contest. The Buccs committed 14 errors, while Newton had 18 turnovers.
But at the end of the day it all led to a 76-53 victory for Covington, which improves to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the CCC.
The Buccs look to keep the momentum going on Tuesday with a road trip to Mississinawa Valley.
