FEBRUARY 22, 2010 - LEWISBURG
Monday night was a trap game for the Covington Buccaneers as they traveled to Tri-County North to face the 1-17 Panthers in a makeup contest.
Being it was the final regular season game, there's always a concern for a lack of focus with the tournament on the horizon.
"You worry about maybe overlooking a team like that (with a 1-17 record), because their record is misleading," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "They have some quickness and some size that can give you problems. Fortunately our kids came to play."
And the result was a convincing 57-23 victory for the Buccs as they overcame a slow start to dominate over the final three quarters.
"We turned the ball over in three of our first five possessions and only scored 9 points in the first quarter," Craft explained. "But the second quarter was huge for us."
That's because after a Tri-County North basket closed the gap to 9-5 to open the second, the Buccs went on a 19-2 run to take a 28-7 lead at the half.
"Different guys came in and got us going (in the second quarter)," Craft continued. "Sprank (Garrett Sprankle) hit a big shot and we were able to get some points on put backs."
Tri-County North played with more of a sense of purpose in the third quarter, scoring 10 points in the frame.
But the Buccaneer's dominance inside was too much as the margin increased to 41-17 after three quarters and 57-23 by games end.
"We found some match-ups inside and were able to take advantage of it," said Craft. "Our size and strength inside was a big advantage for us."
Which showed in the statistics as the Buccs dominated inside for a 30-6 advantage in points-in-the-paint.
Plus, Covington held a significant advantage on the boards, 23-14.
"We got 11 offensive rebounds," Craft said. "That's a lot of extra opportunities to put points on the board."
Another telling statistic for the Buccs was the 24 Tri-County North turnovers that were forced to just 9 committed by Covington.
"I'm pleased with our defensive effort," said Craft. "These kids always play hard and it shows at the defensive end. We made them take tough shots and crashed the boards."
The Panthers rarely did get a good look at the basket and the result was an 8-for-29 shooting night for (27.6%). Tri-County North was 3-for-10 from three-point range and made just 4 of 7 free throws.
Covington, on the other hand, took 48 shots in the contest, making 22 for 45.8%. The Buccs were also 4-for-15 from behind the arc (26.7%) and 9 of 11 from the free throw line (81.8%).
"I would have liked to have seen us get to the free throw line more often," Craft stated. "When we did get to the line we did a good job of knocking them down."
Three Buccaneers scored in double figures with Adam Craft leading the way with 12 points. Jordy Meyer and Josh Boehringer each scored 10 points and combined for 14 rebounds.
With the victory the Buccs conclude the regular season with a 12-8 record overall and 9-3 in the Cross County Conference.
Covington begins sectional tournament play on Saturday against Bradford at Piqua High School.
