Covington begins their 19th year in the Cross County Conference enthusiastically with a team, which has worked extremely hard over the off-season. The Covington Buccaneers enter the 2009-10 season coming off a 9-13 record and (6-6) in the Cross County Conference.

The varsity team this year will have some experience, as six-letterman return for the Buccs. The team will once again face some stiff competition in the CCC and like always will have a more than competitive non-league schedule.

Covington hosts Versailles and Marion Local and the Buccs will play in the WPTW Holiday Tourney to be held at Piqua High School. The Buccs also have tough non-league games on the road against Fairlawn, New Bremen, Milton, and Anna.

The Buccaneer players on the varsity roster this season will be expected to provide the leadership necessary in order to challenge for the league title and be tournament ready.

Senior Jordy Meyer (6’2) will bring the team athleticism to the post-position and he is versatile enough to step out on the perimeter as well.

Senior Adam Craft (6’1) will return at the point guard position and provide the necessary leadership in all areas. Adam will play in the backcourt after a good season last year at the varsity level.

Senior Ben Christian (6’2) will and will be counted for leadership and provide the Buccs with an inside/outside scoring threat.

Senior Garrett Sprankle (6'0) and Senior Garrett Clark (5’10) also will compete for varsity action and will give the Buccs added depth.

The other returning lettermen are Juniors: Eric Beckstedt (5’10), Jake Bitner (5’10) and Josh Boehringer (6’1). Eric Beckstedt was the leading scorer on last year’s team and looks to add a solid floor game to his repertoire. Jake Bitner will returns after a solid year at the varsity level last season.

Josh Boehringer is a two time letter winner as a junior & should give the Buccs a strong post presence with his aggressive play.

Several more players including, Juniors Martin Leistner (5’7), Tyler Noffsinger (5’8), Kody Spade (6’2) and Jake Stewart ((6’0) all played primarily at the reserve level last season and each will compete for varsity action during the course of the season.

Freshman Cole Owens (6’4) has a nice touch around the basket and has the size to give the Buccs added support and depth to the varsity team. All of the players on this year’s team will provide the Buccs with plenty of effort and heart each and every contest.

The 2009-10 Buccaneer hoopsters enter this campaign with optimism and excitement. However, the Cross County Conference will provide some tough competition. Add to this the non-league foes, and you can see that the Buccs will have many challenges to overcome as they strive to continue the tradition of excellence.
