DECEMBER 30, 2009 - PIQUA
By Rob Kiser, Piqua Daily Call

One thing was clear after the Russia boys basketball team defeated Covington 60-52 to win the second annual BIG (Buckeye Insurance Group) Holiday Classic sponsored by 1570 WPTW.

All four teams (Lehman and Piqua played in the consolation game) and local basketball teams were the winners.

“We are happy to a part of this,” winning Russia coach Paul Bremigan said. “It is a great atmospher for our kids and gives us a chance to get on the floor where we play sectionals for two games. And Piqua always does a great job running the tournament.”

Covington coach Roger Craft’s sentiments were the same.

“You can beat getting a chance to play in a tournament atmosphere like this,” Craft said. “It is great for the kids. It is a great environment and it gives us two games on the floor where we play in the sectionals. It was (another great tournament). You have trophy that everybody is playing for.”

And the Buccs and Raiders capped things off with an exciting game between two programs with great tradition.

After Covington led most of the first half and got off to a quick start in the second half, Russia stole the momentum in the third quarter and held off Covington at the end.

“It feels great to win this tournament,” Russia junior Levi Francis, the tournament MVP said. “This was one of our goals at the beginning of the season.”

And ironically, it may well have been a technical foul on Bremigan that swung the momentum.

“It kind of worked in reverse,” Craft said. “We thought it was going to help us and that is not the way it worked out.”

The Buccs had led 29-28 at the half. After Adam Craft scored for the Buccs to start the second half, Bremigan was whistled after a Russia traveling call and Eric Beckstedt hit both free throws to make it 33-28.

But, Russia seemed to find another energy and intensity level, scoring nine straight points to take a 37-33 lead.

Francis scored the first six points, including an offensive rebound and off an assist from Nathan Wilson.

“Coach just called us over and told us we were going to go full go,” Francis said. “We got fired up.”

Tyler Goubeaux completed the run with a 3-point field goal.

“We changed some things up on defense,” Bremigan said. “We were able to force them into some turnovers and get some baskets off that. Levi (Francis) did a great job on (Adam) Craft defensively in the third quarter.”

Russia suffered a blow late in the third quarter, when Goubeaux went down with an ankle injury and was unable to return.

But, the Raiders opened the fourth quarter with 10 straight points to go in front 51-39 with 5:00 remaining.

“It was tough to lose Tyler (Goubeaux),” Francis said. “But, everyone stepped up. Colyn McEldowney, Andy Toller, Joel Meyer, Jacob Hoying. They all stepped up.”

But, led by Craft, Covington got back into the game.

He scored eight quick points, with a Cole Owens 3-point play sandwiched in th middle, and the Buccs found themselves trailing just 55-51 at the 2:00 mark.

“We were right there,” Roger Craft said. “We were only four down. We just have to get past these stretches where we go four or five minutes without scoring. We didn’t handle things very well in the third quarter.”

Toller hit two free throws, McEldowney added one and a basket by Wilson capped the scoring as the Raiders held on for the tournament title.

“We had a 12-point lead with five minustes to go,” Bremigan said. “We pulled out a little bit. I didn’t think we played very good defense for about three minutes. But, this is the first close game we have had. This was a good test for us.”

Francis finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, while McEldowney added 10 points. Wilson joined Francis on the all-tournament team for Russia.

Craft had another big game for Covington with 16 points, while Jordy Meyer had 13 points and five rebounds. Both were named to the all-
tournament team.

“Adam (Craft) did a nice job,” Roger Craft said. “Jordy (Meyer) has really improved. He just needs to believe in Jordy. He will and once he does that, he is going to have a good year.”

Russia was 21 of 45 from the floor for 47 percent and 12 of 17 from the line for 71 percent. Covington was 18 of 41 from the floor for 44
percent and 14 of 20 from the line for 70 percent.

Russia outrebounded Covington 17-16 and the Raiders had just eight turnovers to Covington’s 19.

“You can see that (Adam) Craft is going to be a scorer for Covington,” Bremigan said. “That’s a good Covington team we were able to beat tonight.”

And in the end, everyone was a winner.
