In A Shooting Slump...
The Covington Buccaneers are struggling finding their range as evident by the 31% shooting effort in a 49-42 loss at Tri-Village.
Martin Leistner connected on two first half treys, but success behind the arc was rare for the Buccaneers.

JANUARY 15, 2010, NEW MADISON
The Covington Buccaneers pride themselves on controlling a basketball game inside the paint. But being outscored 28-10 against Tri-Village, notably a finesse team, led to a frustrating 49-42 loss Friday night.

"We are shooting horrible from the perimeter," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "Perimeter shooting opens up things inside the paint, if we make those shots. When we do get the ball inside they collapse because they don't respect our outside shot."

Uncharacteristic for Covington, it attempted a season-high 22 three-point field goals, making just five for 23%. The Buccs didn't have much more success from two-point range as they only converted on 9 of 23 attempts.

All totaled, Covington shot 14-for-45 from the floor for 31%.

"I didn't realize we shot that many (from three-point range)," said Craft. "That's a lot more than we normally shoot. If we make a few of those early, we probably don't shoot that many."

Tri-Village didn't exactly light the scoreboard up either as it connected on 40% of its shots, making 17 of 42 field goal attempts. The Patriots also struggled from three-point range, connecting on 3 of 10 for 30%.

"Defensively, we played very well," Craft stated. "Marty (Leisnter) had a great game defensively tonight."

That was evident by the fact that Tri-Village's leading scorer, Drew Moore, was held to just 8 points - 15 points below his season average. Leistner guarded the sharp shooter most of the evening, but was spotted by Adam Craft and Tyler Noffsinger.

"If you would have told me before the game that they (Tri-Village) would only score 49 points and we would hold (Drew) Moore to 8 points, I would say we win by at least ten," said Craft.

Covington did hold Tri-Village to 49 points and Moore to 8, but the Patriots played outstanding defense as well. Tri-Village, which has been known for it's man-to-man smothering defense, changed things up against Covington and came out in a zone defense.

"They played man every game we saw them," Craft explained. "But we know how to attack a zone (defense). At this point of the season everyone has faced a zone. If we make a couple of shots from the perimeter early, they would have probably went back to a man or a box-and-one on (Eric) Beckstedt."

Covington didn't make the outside shots it needed and it led to a low scoring first half. The Buccs could only manage 16 points as it trailed 26-16 at the break.

Neither team could find much success in the third frame as the two teams combined for a total of 13 points. But Covington did enough cut the margin to 31-24 and give itself a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter.

And senior Adam Craft did all he could to will the Buccs to victory as he score 16 of Covington's 18 points in the fourth.

But Tri-Village connected on enough of its free throws down the stretch to keep Covington at a distance and ultimately preserve the win.

"The bottom line is we are struggling shooting the ball right now," emphasized Craft. "We just have to fight through it and find a way to make shots. It's about finding a way to overcome and persevere."

Covington held a slim 26-22 advantage on the boards with the two teams each pulling down 7 rebounds at the offensive end.

Tri-Village did a little better taking care of the basketball, however, as it only turned the ball over 9 times to 13 for Covington.

In the end the difference in the game was points in the paint for Tri-Village as Covington drops to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the Cross County Conference.

The Buccs look to rebound Saturday at New Bremen.
