DECEMBER 12, 2009 - COVINGTON
Covington and Versailles gave each other several opportunities to seal a victory, but neither team could capitalize until the visiting Tigers hit on three clutch free throws late in the fourth quarter to hand the Buccs a 48-45 defeat.

"We didn't execute when we needed to, plain and simple," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "When you are playing a team with a lot of pride and tradition like Versailles, you have to execute better than we did tonight."

Covington led throughout and actually had a 12-point lead early in the third quarter, but Versailles willed itself back into the game with its smothering defense.

"We knew they would be aggressive on defense and we knew we would have to be strong with the ball," Craft explained. "We also knew we had to be more patient running the offense, but we rushed way too many shots. When you are getting outside shots blocked, you know that isn't good shot selection. We had too many of those tonight."

This opened the door for Versailles to eventually take a 47-45 lead on a pair of free throws, but Covington still had 10 seconds left to work for a game-tying shot.

Unfortunately, a technical foul was called on Craft for saying of all things "Thank You" after asking and receiving a timeout.

"I guess I need to keep my composure," Craft said.

Versailles converted on one of the two free throw attempts, giving the Buccs only 3.7 seconds to tie the game.

And the three-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark, ending the contest.

"We had our chances," said Craft. "We didn't finish shots inside the paint tonight."

Which is a credit to the strength of the Versailles defense as the Tigers held Covington to a 12-for-45 shooting night for 27%.

"In our first two games we were able to use our physical advantage inside and shot pretty well inside the paint," Craft explained. "Tonight we played a team who plays physical too and we didn't convert inside the way we should have. A lot of that is a credit to them (Versailles) with the way they challenged our shots."

It was a physical battle where both teams gave as good as they took. The rebounding tallies were even with 25 rebounds each and the turnovers were virtually even with Versailles committing 15 and Covington 13.

In the end it came down to who could take advantage of opportunities and the Tigers seized the moment in the final 20 second of the game.

"They made one or two more plays than we did," said Craft. "But we'll learn from this and move forward. Our focus now is on Miami East on Tuesday."

Covington drops to 2-1 on the season, while Versailles improves to 2-0.

Even the mascots got into the act by challenging each other to a dual at halftime. This one ended in a draw as Captain Covington had the better dance moves, but the Tiger stole his sward.
