JANUARY 13, 2012 - COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers captured their second straight win on Friday, defeating Ansonia 54-43 in Cross County Conference action.

And it was a fast start and strong finish that got the job done against a never-say-die Ansonia team.

"It was nice to get out fast on them and set the tone" said Covington coach Roger Craft. "Trent (Tobias) came in off the bench early and got us going. It was nice to see him hit some big shots."

Tobias scored all six of his points in the opening frame on two jumpers and a steal he converted into a layup.

It led to a 17-8 first quarter lead that Covington extended to 28-16 at the break.

Looking to put the Tigers away early in the second half, the Buccs found themselves committing careless turnovers against the full court pressure.

And Ansonia took advantage by going on a 10-1 run to cut the deficit to 29-26 and force a Buccaneer timeout to regroup.

"One of the things we have to do better is coming out stronger in the second half," said Craft. "We talked about that at halftime, but for some reason we came out flat."

Another thing that was emphasized was getting the ball inside to Cole Owens.

"We needed to get the ball inside," Craft continued. "Normally teams double down on Cole, but they (Ansonia) were pretty much playing him straight up. Once Cole started taking it strong to the basket things opened up."

Because Ansonia really didn't have an answer as Owens led Covington with 20 points - ten of those coming off of twelve free throw attempts.

It all led to a huge fourth quarter and a 54-43 win for the Buccs.

"You have to give Ansonia credit because they never quit, even when they were down at the half," praised Craft of the Tigers. "They have some gritty kids."

As does Covington, which had balance across the board at the offensive end with six players contributing with points.

Ryan Craft joined Owens in double figures with 10 points, while Troy Cron scored nine points to go along with the six points scored by Trent Tobias, five from Austin Angle and four by Dylan Owens.

Ansonia was led by Zach Brown, who matched Cole Owens for game-high honors with 20 points, and Derrick Kaiser, who scored 11 points.

Covington converted on 14-25 from two-point range (56%), 2-7 from behind the arc (28%) and 20-32 from the free throw line (62%).

Ansonia was 13-29 in two-pointers (44%), 3-14 from three-point range (21%) and 8-17 from the charity stripe (47%).

The Buccs held a significant advantage on the boards, pulling down 28 rebounds to 18 for Ansonia and 7 offensive boards to just 2 for the Tigers.

The victory evens Covington's record at 5-5 overall and improves it's CCC mark to 3-2.

The Buccs travel to New Bremen tomorrow night in non-conference action.
