FEBRUARY 17, 2012 - COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers wanted to win Friday's home finale so badly for the two seniors on the roster who have meant so much for the program over the last four years.
"Great kids," said Covington coach Roger Craft of seniors Steven Blei and Sam Earick. "The kids wanted to win this one for them, to send them off with a win in their final home game."
Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be as the Buccs dug themselves into an early hole and couldn't dig themselves out of it in a 48-43 loss to Arcanum.
"We came out soft and dug ourselves a hole early," Craft explained. "We didn't play very well defensively and gave up 30 points in the first half. It's hard to come back from that."
Arcanum couldn't miss early as the Trojans jumped out to a 15-3 lead before a Dylan Owens trey made the score 15-6 after one quarter of play.
Covington battled back to close the gap to 26-19 in the second quarter, but Cole Owens picked up his third foul and Arcanum took advantage by scoring the final four points of the half for a 30-19 lead.
"It's tough when Cole is on the bench," said Craft. "He's a weapon inside and it hurt when he got into foul trouble."
Trouble Owens couldn't find his way out of in the second half as he picked up a fourth foul midway through the third and fouled out less than a minute after re-entering the game in the fourth quarter.
Still, Covington battled its way back thanks to three second half treys by Dylan Owens and a trey by Ryan Craft.
The hot outside shooting led to an 11-5 advantage for the Buccs in the third quarter and Covington eventually cut the deficit to 37-36 midway through the fourth quarter.
"The positive thing about tonight is we hit some big shots from the perimeter and the kids never quit," said Craft. "Dylan (Owens) had a nice game offensively. He's been coming on and gained some confidence the past few games. That will help with the tournament just around the corner."
With Covington on a roll and gaining in momentum, the Trojans responded with a trey of their own to increase the margin to 40-36 as the Buccs just couldn't the the defensive stop it needed down the stretch.
"We were one play, one finish from getting the win," Craft said. "It's disappointing."
In spite of not capturing the win for the seniors, it doesn't diminish the contributions Steven Blei and Sam Earick has made over the last four years.
"Both of them are special kids," praised Craft. "Steven is first class and loyal. He does everything he can to make the team better and Sam has worked his tail off to become a very nice player for us. Both of the kids contributed a great deal to our program."
The loss drops Covington to 10-10 on the season as the Buccs will battle Bethel in the opening round of the sectional tournament next Friday at Tipp City.
