JANUARY 7, 2012 - BRANDT
The Covington Buccaneers ran into a buzz saw at Bethel High School on Friday as the host Bees controlled every aspect of the game en route to handing the Buccs a 48-27 defeat.
And the tone of the game was established from the outset as Bethel scored the first nine points of the contest before a short bucket by Cole Owens broke the ice for Covington.
After a trey by Kyle Hamlin pushed the Bethel lead to 12-2, Covington went on a 5-0 run to cut the margin to 12-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Buccaneers gradually closed the gap even more in the second quarter - eventually cutting the deficit to 21-19 with under one minute left in the half.
But another huge trey by Hamlin at the buzzer pushed the Bethel lead to 24-19 to give the Bees momentum at the break.
And the momentum would not be surrendered by Bethel as the Bees outscored Covington 29-8 in the second half to pull away for the impressive 21-point win.
Covington was led in scoring by Ryan Craft, who was the lone Buccaneer in double figures with 13 points.
Bethel had three players reach double digits in scoring in a balanced scoring effort as Kyle Hamlin dropped in 19 points, Gus Schwieterman with 12 points and Patrick Bain contributing with 11 points.
At the end of the day Bethel shot better, rebounded better, defended better, took better care of the basketball and played harder. The effort pushed Bethel's record to 6-2 on the season, while Covington dropped to 3-5.
The Buccs look to circle the wagons tomorrow night at Milton Union in a non-conference affair with the Bulldogs.
