FEBRUARY 10, 2012 - BRADFORD
Patience is a virtue. It's an old saying that rings true in just about every walk of life.
For the Covington Buccaneers, patience was a virtue on the basketball court in a 48-27 victory over rival Bradford on Friday.
"We were patient with the basketball," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "The kids did a nice job of listening and executing what we wanted them to do."
Covington had to be patient because Bradford packed its zone defense so tight in an attempt to shut down Cole Owens, the Buccs' major inside threat. To offset that, Covington maneuvered the ball on the perimeter until an opening materialized inside the paint.
"We were trying to get them out of their zone and exploit the advantage we had inside with Cole," Craft explained. "The kids did a great job of staying patient and taking what the defense gave us."
Which showed in the boxscore as Owens led Covington with a game-high 24 points.
"They didn't have an answer for Cole," continued Craft. "He's a load in there and tough to handle when he gets near the basket."
But it was Cole's twin brother Dylan Owens that got Covington rolling early with a trey and a lay-up after a Ryan Craft jumper to give the Buccs a 7-0 lead.
Fresh off of hitting a buzzer-beater against Twin Valley South, Dylan tallied ten points on the night as the Owens twins scored 34 of Covington's 48 points in the contest.
"You can see the confidence growing in Dylan," Craft said. "We saw it in practice this week and it carried over to the game. It's all about attitude. He understands that you're not going to make every shot, but you have to keep your focus on the next play, the next possession."
The momentum early was heavily in Covington's favor as the Buccs built a 15-6 lead after one, but Bradford turned the momentum by cutting the margin to 20-14 at the half.
"With the rivalry, we knew Bradford was going to give us their best shot," said Craft. "And they did too. "They played hard for four quarters."
Covington regained the momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Bradford 16-8 in the frame to take a 36-22 lead.
From there the Buccs put the game away in the fourth quarter for a 48-27 win.
"We got after it in the second half," commented Craft. "We made some big stops early and then did a nice job of getting the ball inside to Cole."
Covington also did an outstanding job on the boards and taking care of the basketball. The Buccs held a 22-13 rebounding advantage and an 11-4 advantage in turnovers.
"We were active on the boards and we did a nice job of taking care of the basketball," said Craft. "We average twelve turnovers a game, so that's eight more opportunities we had to score points."
Covington shot 20 of 39 from the floor for 51.3%, 3 of 11 from behind the arc (27.3%) and made 5 of 8 from the charity stripe (62.5%).
Bradford was 10 of 29 from the floor (34.5%), 2 of 7 from three-point range (28.6%) and 5 of 8 from the free throw line (62.5%).
The Buccs dominated inside the paint, scoring 30 points to just 14 for Bradford.
It all led to a 48-27 win as Covington improves to 10-9 on the season with one game to play before tournaments.
That final game is next Friday at home against Arcanum.
