JANUARY 7, 2012 - WEST MILTON
Twenty four hours from hitting rock bottom in a loss at Bethel, the Covington Buccaneers looked like a totally different basketball team in a 58-53 win over Milton-Union Saturday.

"We looked more like the Covington Buccaneers tonight," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "You could tell this morning in the walk through that the kids were disappointed in last night and that they had talked about it amongst themselves. There was a different attitude in the gym this morning and it carried over to the game."

As if erasing the bad taste from Friday night wasn't enough motivation, the Buccaneers received even more incentive prior to the game from Jason Meyer, a former Covington and Dartmouth University standout. Meyer was on hand to witness his mother's induction into Milton-Union's athletic hall of fame and surprised the kids with a pre-game speech.

"When Jason walked into the locker room, our kids lit up," Craft explained. "You talk about tradition - Jason Meyer is the tradition of Covington basketball - the type of player he was. All the kids know him and look up to him. For him to come in and give the kids a speech like that was huge. It pumped the kids up."

And it showed from the outset as the Buccs torched the nets for 25 points in the first quarter - just two points short of what Covington scored throughout the entire contest against Bethel just 24 hours earlier.

"The kids couldn't wait to get on the floor," said Craft. "Once they got out there they went all out. It was fun to watch."

Troy Cron set the table for Covington, attacking the Milton defense and making dazzling passes to wide open teammates. When the opportunity presented itself, he dropped in a huge trey and two circus lay-ups that brought the Covington crowd to it's feet.

The rest of the team followed suit and before the Bulldogs could settle in the Buccaneers held a 25-13 lead after one.

But like good teams do, Milton never got rattled and gradually scratched and clawed its way back into the game - cutting the deficit to 37-28 at the break and 47-46 at the end of the third quarter.

"Milton has a nice team and they hit some big shots to get back into the game," Craft praised. "It wasn't like we didn't shoot well ourselves. It's just a credit to them that they were able to hang in there and battle the way they did."

In the process Covington found itself going to the bench much more often than it wanted as Cole Owens was in foul trouble throughout much of the second half and eventually fouled out midway through the fourth quarter.

But other kids stepped up, in particular Cole's twin brother Dylan Owens.

"When Cole got into foul trouble we needed other kids to step up," said Craft. "Dylan had one of his better all-around games and had a very good night under the basket."

Dylan Owens killed the Milton momentum with two huge stick-backs under the basket and Ryan Craft canned a trey to give Covington the cushion it needed to force the Bulldogs to foul.

And although shooting just 42% from the free throw line throughout the contest, the Buccs made just enough free throws down the stretch to seal the 58-53 win.

"This was a big win for us," Craft said. "These kids are a close-knit group and they stuck together. If we can continue to play with the effort we played with tonight, we'll be fine."

Covington had four players score in double figures with Dylan Owens leading the way with 16 points. Ryan Craft had 15 points, while Troy Cron scored 12 and Cole Owens had 11.

Milton was led by a phenomenal effort by Caleb Poland, who led all players with a game-high 25 points.

Covington shot 50% from two-point range (17-34) and 26% from behind the arc (4-15), while Milton connected on 46% from two-point range (14-30) and 40% from downtown (4-10).

But the difference in the outcome likely came down to Covington's edge on the boards. The Buccs recorded 34 total rebounds to 23 for Milton and held a 16-6 advantage at the offensive end.

It all led to a big win to improve the Buccs' record to 4-5 overall.
