JANUARY 27, 2012 - COVINGTON
It's always a packed house for the "Battle of Route 48", the annual rivalry throw-down between the Covington Buccaneers and the Newton Indians - two programs whose home floors are just five miles apart.

With many of the kids and families from both teams knowing each other, it's guaranteed to be hotly contested, physical and loud in the gymnasium.

It was that and more Friday night as Newton came to Covington with a huge crowd and the Buccs were appreciated with their largest showing of supporters this season.

"This was a good crowd for a basketball game, especially with the rivalry," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "It was a great atmosphere for basketball."

And the kids in Covington uniforms didn't disappoint, overcoming a sluggish third period to take a convincing 47-32 victory over their neighboring rivals.

"Overall, we played pretty well," Craft said. "We had some spots where we struggled a little, but the kids stayed together and overcame it."

Both teams traded blows in the opening frame, neither being able to gain much of an advantage as Covington held a slim 14-10 after one.

But Dylan Owens found himself on the bench after picking up two quick fouls in the first two minutes of the game.

Still, Covington managed to put together arguably its strongest quarter of the season in the second frame, holding Newton to just two points to take a 24-12 lead at the break.

"We got off to a pretty good start and that was big," said Craft of the first half.

Anyone anticipating a Buccaneer blowout was disappointed as the Indians scratches and clawed their way back into the game in the third quarter on a pair of three-pointers by Dan Vance and a smothering defense that held Covington to just six points in the frame.

Much of Covington's offensive issues was due to turnovers against the Newton pressure.

"Give Newton credit, they brought the pressure and we had a problem there taking care of the basketball because of it," Craft said. "It seemed like we were stuck on 30 points forever."

This all led to a tight game heading into the fourth quarter with Covington leading 30-23 and Newton holding the momentum after the gutsy defensive effort.

Needing a spark, Covington got it from junior point quarter Troy Cron, who made an acrobatic lay-up and converted the attempt into a three-point play after drawing the foul. The Buccaneer point guard finished the night with 11 points.

"Troy had one of his better game tonight," Craft praised. "He was the catalyst out there - making some big plays on his own and setting up other guys for easy shots."

And two of the beneficiaries of Cron's play were Cole Owens and Ryan Craft, who each tallied 15 points, many of those coming in a 17-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.

"Cole earned everything he got," said Craft. "He's so strong that contact doesn't affect his shot if he goes up with two hands on the basketball. That's something he's worked on in practice and it made a difference tonight."

With the game well in hand in the final two minutes, Covington killed nearly 1:30 off the clock on its final possession.

"We did a very good job of moving the ball around down he stretch," Craft explained. "With their (Newton's) legs getting tired it made hit difficult for them to kill the clock."

And Covington walked off the floor with a hard-fought 47-32 win to improve its overall record to 7-7 and its CCC mark to 4-3.

The Buccs have a much deserved few days of rest before traveling to Mississinawa Valley on Tuesday.
