DECEMBER 9, 2011 - LEWISBURG
With a majority of the Covington roster fresh off of football season, the Buccaneers looked to find their basketball legs in the season opener at Tri-County North on Friday.
"We've practiced and played scrimmages, but a real game is totally different," said Covington coach Roger Craft after his Buccs overcame some sluggish moments to record a 51-38 win. "Our kids are in great shape, but we're still trying to get them in basketball shape."
And it took an entire first half to shake off the rust before Covington went on a 14-5 run in the third quarter to put some separation on the scoreboard.
"It took us a while, but our defensive pressure got us going," Craft said. "We were able to get some turnovers and get the game more up-tempo a bit."
Tri-County North came into the game winless in two previous contests, but Covington found itself in a battle in the first half. Every time the Buccs would appear to take the momentum, the Panthers hit a big shot from long range to stay within striking distance.
Covington only led 13-12 after one and 28-23 at the break.
Plus, foul trouble was creeping up on the Buccs as starting point guard Troy Cron and starting center Cole Owens picked up three fouls each in the first half alone.
"It seemed like we were in foul trouble all night," Craft explained. "But our bench came in and gave us a big lift. Gabe (Mohler), Trent (Tobias), Sam (Earick) and Austin (Angle) had nice nights off the bench."
Covington bench may have only accounted for four points in the contest, but the defensive effort was what led to the 14-5 third quarter run.
"Our effort was good," Craft said. "The kids played hard and I'm pleased with that."
Troy Cron ended up fouling out early in the fourth quarter and Cole Owens played the rest of the way with four fouls.
"It hurts when you have your point guard on the bench watching a lot more than you'd like," said Craft. "We had 11 assists as a team and he had six of them. For no more minutes he had on the floor, that's pretty darn good."
Cron sat and watched his teammates close out the game at the free throw line as the Buccs made five of 10 in the fourth quarter alone.
"The fourth quarter was about making free throws," Craft said. "We made enough, but we have to shoot better than fifty percent."
In all, Covington didn't have a stellar night shooting the ball as it converted on 40% of its two-point field goals (17-42), 20% from behind the arc (3-15), 50% from inside the paint (11-22) and 53% from the charity stripe (8-15).
Tri-County North shot 45% from two-point range (9-20), 28% on threes (4-14), 45% inside the paint (5-16) and 61% from the free throw line (8-13).
Covington held a 29-23 advantage on the boards and recorded 13 offensive rebounds to just five for Tri-County North.
The Buccs also took care of the basketball better than Tri-County North, committing six turnovers to 13 for the Panthers.
It all led to a 51-38 victory for Covington (1-0) as Versailles comes to town tomorrow night.
