DECEMBER 16, 2011 - NEW PARIS
It wasn't a work of art for the Covington basketball team, but the Buccs managed to record their second win in three tries on Friday - beating National Trail on the road, 52-32.
"We were terrible in the paint tonight," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "Fifteen of our twenty baskets tonight were in the paint, but we only made 20% of the shots around the basket. We didn't shoot very often outside the paint."
The first quarter was as bad as it could get for Covington as it couldn't find the bottom of the net over the first five minutes of the contest. It wasn't until a short runner by Cole Owens with 4:50 left in the first that the Buccs managed to score.
And with under one minute left in the frame the Buccs were on the short end of an 11-2 score. Fortunately back-to-back buckets by Alex Baskerville and Austin Angle cut the deficit to 11-6 at the end of one quarter of play.
Covington did start finding the basket in the second quarter and outscored National Trail 14-3 in the frame to take a 20-14 lead at the break.
"Our bench came in and saved us," Craft said. "Trent (Tobias), Austin (Angle) and San (Earick) all came in and made plays."
Covington used a 15-7 scoring advantage in the third quarter to push its lead to 35-21, but the frustration took its toll in the final stanza as Dylan Owens fouled out and Alex Baskerville was ejected from the game.
Still, Covington put enough cushion on the scoreboard to take home a 52-32 win - a win the Buccs won't take with pride - especially with Miami East coming to town on Tuesday.
"We'll have to play better on Tuesday than what we played tonight," challenged Craft of his team. "We'll get it handed to us if we play like this."
Covington did own the boards 38-24 and 14-5 at the offensive end, but it can feel fortunate National Trail failed to convert on any of its 13 three-point attempts.
And in spite of improving to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the CCC, there isn't much the Buccs can be pleased with in what was far from a work of art.
