JANUARY 24, 2012 - NEW MADISON
The objective of basketball is simple - put the ball in the basket and stop the other team from doing the same thing. If you can do that more than your opponent, you win.
The problem is...in order to accomplish the objective of basketball you have to play harder, execute better and make the shots when the opportunity presents itself.
Unfortunately for the Covington Buccaneers, they failed to accomplish their objective against a talented Tri-Village team. The Patriots simply played harder, executed better and made their shots en route to an impressive 65-30 victory.
And it was junior guard Kyle Pipenger that did the most damage for Tri-Village, scoring 15 of his game-high 23 points in a first half that set the tone of the game. Whether it was a fade-away jumper or driving to the basket for a lay-up, Pipenger was the camel that broke Covington's back early as Tri-Village built a 33-15 lead at the break.
Like all good teams do, Tri-Village put the game away in the third quarter by outscoring the Buccs 20-8 in the frame.
But the Patriots went a different route after intermission, feeding the ball inside to Evan Barger and Tyler Cook - a duo that combined to outscore Covington's big men 23-12 in the contest.
Leading 53-23 with one quarter to go, both teams emptied their benches the rest of the way as Covington fell by the score of 65-30 for its third league loss in six outings against CCC opponents.
In all Covington drops to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the CCC, while Tri-Village remains in contention with an 11-3 record and 6-1 in the conference.
The Buccs were led by junior point guard Troy Cron with 10 points, while Tri-Village had three players score in double figures; Pipenger with 23, Barger with 13 and Cook had 10.
Covington went to the free throw line for 21 attempts to just seven for Tri-Village, but the Buccs only converted on 11 of their shots from the charity stripe.
The Buccs look to rebound at home on Friday against rival Newton, another CCC opponent.
