DECEMBER 10, 2011 - COVINGTON
When you play a team the caliber of Versailles you better do the basics of basketball well - in particular, make good decisions with the basketball, box out on the glass, and finish at the hoop.
Covington failed to do those things Saturday night and it led to a frustrating 52-31 loss to the Tigers on the Buccs' home floor.
"We had our chances, that's for sure," said Covington coach Roger Craft. "Defensively, we played well enough to win, but we didn't get it done at the offensive end or on the boards."
Covington couldn't buy a basket in the first quarter, failing to convert inside the paint. The Buccs' only points of the frame came on a jumper and a free throw by Cole Owens.
Meanwhile, Versailles didn't light up the scoreboard either but still managed an 8-3 lead after one.
The Tigers pushed their lead to 14-3, but Covington managed to cut the deficit to 14-8 and had the ball with 45 seconds left in the half with all intentions of taking the last shot.
But three straight Buccaneer turnovers led to six easy layups for Versailles and a 20-8 lead at the break.
"We had a brain freeze at the end of the half," Craft explained. "We had every intention of taking the last shot and at worst we felt we would only be down by six. As poorly as we shot, we would have felt pretty good only going in (at the half) down by six. Instead, we made some poor decisions and it cost us. A 6-0 run in a game like this is huge."
To make matters worse for Covington, Ryan Craft suffered a foot injury right before the half and was never able to return to the game.
"I'm not sure what happened (with Ryan)," Craft said. "I don't know if he landed on someone's foot or just came down wrong. Hopefully it's not serious."
In spite of being down 20-8 at the break, Covington was fortunate the score wasn't out of hand as Versailles only made one of 14 attempts from behind the arc - many of those shot attempts coming in the first half.
Struggling to hit the outside shot, the Tigers shifted their focus to getting the ball to the rim in the second half and the strategy worked.
Versailles outscored Covington 30-14 inside the paint in the contest and torched the nets for 32 second half points to pull away for a 21-point win.
In all, the Tigers shot 47% from the floor (22-46), 65% from two-point range (21-32) and 7% from behind the arc (1-14).
Covington shot 40% overall (12-30), 42% from two-point range (9-21) and 33% on three pointers (3-9).
The Buccs committed 14 turnovers in the contest, while Versailles only turned the ball over seven times. The Tigers also held a 20-18 rebounding advantage and a 7-5 advantage at the offensive end.
"They are a good team and we knew that coming in," Craft praised of Versailles. "It gives us an pretty good idea of where we are and we have a lot of work to do."
Primarily, improving in the basics of basketball.
You can't commit 14 turnovers, get out rebounded 20-18 and outscored 30-14 inside the paint and expect to win.
Not against a team like Versailles.
