BUCCS DROP TO 9-8...
Kenny Atkinson and the Covington Buccaneers were looking for another stellar performance, but Coldwater made life difficult in a 67-55 loss to the Cavaliers.

Nathan Blei scored a game-high 19 points, but it wasn't enough for the Buccs to get a win.

FEBRUARY 4, 2017 - COVINGTON
Coming off of a night where Covington played arguably its best game of the season Friday at Ansonia, the Buccaneers were looking for much of the same against Coldwater in front of a packed house at Covington High School.

Unfortunately, it was anything but close to the performance of 24 hours earlier as Covington struggled all night getting out on Coldwater shooters and preventing the Cavaliers from getting to the free throw.

The result was as 67-55 loss where 30 of Coldwater's points came on ten treys and 19 more came at the free throw line on a whopping 33 attempts.

The game started out the way Covington wanted as Nathan Blei and Trevor Miller came out hot, combining to score 12 of Covington's 14 first quarter points.

Unfortunately for the Buccs, Miller picked up his second foul in the waning moments of the frame and Coldwater capped the quarter with a three-pointer at the buzzer to claim a 17-14 lead.

Zach Parrett scored on a back-door layup to start the second, but Coldwater responded with back-to-back threes and then hit another trey after a Nathan Blei three-pointer.

Trevor Miller came back onto the floor and responded with a layup off of a Zach Parrett steal, but Coldwater capped the first half with a runner to take a 34-25 lead at the break.

In all, Coldwater connected on eight treys in the first half - five coming in the second quarter.

The Buccaneers once again got off to a fast start to start the second half as Blei hit a three and Zach Parrett connected on one of two free throws to cut the deficit to 34-29 and force a Coldwater timeout.

From there, the Cavaliers went on a 14-8 run over the remainder of the third despite a dunk by Zach Parrett that brought the Buccaneer faithful to their feet.

And the Cavaliers built the 48-37 lead by driving to the basket and getting to the free throw line. It resulted in Kenny Atkinson fouling out with seven seconds left in the third - putting Covington in a bind with one quarter to play.

Covington tried getting back into the game by shooting from long range and early in the fourth the Buccaneers had success with a pair of treys by Jayce Pond and another by Trevor Miller.

But time became the Buccs' biggest adversary down the stretch as they were forced to foul in order to expend the game.

And Coldwater made 10 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the Buccaneers' fate.

Nathan Blei led Covington with a game-high 19 points, while Trevor Miller had 16.

In all, Covington made 14 deuces, five treys and were 12 of 20 from the free throw line, while Coldwater dropped in nine two-pointers, 10 treys and made 19 of 33 free throws.

The loss drops Covington's record to 9-8 on the season as it looks to stay above the .500 mark on Tuesday at home against Tri-Village.

Jayce Pond and the Covington Buccaneers found easy shots hard to come by against the Coldwater defense.
