By Rob Kiser - Piqua Daily Call
It is not an unfamiliar positions for Covington boys basketball coach Matt Pond.

And one where he sees the glass as completely full.

Pond didn't get to see his full team until the Buccs were eliminated from the football playoffs - and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

"I think it is definitely a plus for guys to have had success in other sports," Pond said. "And most of our football players are returning lettermen. It also gives a chance to get in the gym with some of the other guys and gives us some extra time with some of our younger guys."

And those football players couldn't wait to get in the gym.

"They are here a couple days earlier than expected," Pond said. "That just shows you they are excited and can't wait to get going."

The Buccs return seven of their top eight players from a year ago, when they finished 10-14.

The loss is a notable one in Jordan Maschino.

"That's a double-double we lost," Pond said. "We are going to have to pick up the rebounding and did some different things for us out there - but we have everyone else back."

At the guard spots will be 6-foot senior Nathan Blei, 5-7 senior Jayce Pond, 5-7 junior Jett Murphy, 5-11 junior Nathan Lyle, 6-foot junior Braden Miller and 5-11 junior Bradley Wiggins.

"We have a lot of athleticism at the guard spot," Pond said. "We have one four-year player (Blei) and a three-year player (Pond) there."

The wings/posts will include 6-3 junior Zach Parrett, 6-3 senior Trevor Miller and 5-11 senior Adam Lefeld, with 6-3 senior Kenny Atkinson and 6-4 senior Tristin Sowers playing in the post as well.

"We have decent size," Pond said. "About as good as we have had since I have been here."

The Buccs will look to execute the offense and take advantage of opportunities when they are there.

"We will look for the secondary break," Pond said. "One of the keys to our success is going to be our execution offense. To take care of the ball and make good decisions with the ball. That is going to be a real key for us."

The tempo will not be a slow one.

"We hardly ever on going to be walking the ball up the floor," Pond said. "We want to take advantage of our opportunities and we will mix things up on defense. We want to take advantage of the depth we are going to have."

As always, the CCC will feature a number of strong teams.

"It is a strong conference," Pond said. "It is loaded with good teams and good coaches from top to bottom. Every night in the conference is going to be a challenge and we have a strong non-conference schedule as well."

Pond hopes the Buccs experience and athleticism will lead to success.

"I think if we come out and play the way we are capable, we feel like we can be very competitive," Pond said.

And as always, it will be well worth the "wait".
