By Rob Kiser, Piqua Daily Call

After a 12-12 season, the Covington boys basketball team must replace much of its scoring with the graduation of seniors Jayce Pond, Trevor Miller, Nathan Blei, Kenny Atkinson, Adam Lefeld and Tristin Sowers.

But, Covington coach Matt Pond - entering his sixth season as coach - is excited about what lays in front of him.

Covington returns just two starters in 6-foot-4 senior Zach Parrett and 5-foot-7 senior Jett Murphy.

Covington has three seniors who split time between JV and varsity last year in 6-0 Braden Miller, 5-11 Nathan Lyle and 6-0 Bradley Wiggins.

Juniors moving up from a very successful JV team include 6-0 Tyler Fraley, 6-0 Gray Harshbarger and 5-7 Chad Yohey.

Making the move up from the freshman team is Andrew Cates and rounding out the roster are Ryan Gengler and Nick Risner, two seniors who haven't played in several years.

"We have big expectations of Zach (Parrett) and Jett (Murphy), but truthfully we have big expectations from all those guys," Pond said. "The kids from the JV jumped in from the start of off-season and showed it is going to be leadership by committee and we are good with that. It is exciting to see how hard the kids have worked in the offseason. These seniors were in seventh grade when I took over and it is exciting to see the way they have developed."

While Pond has his team together earlier this season - because of Covington not being in the football playoffs - he would have preferred to see the Buccs make another playoff run.

"It is nice to have the kids (early), but not for the reason we have them (missing the playoffs)," Pond said. "I have always wanted any Bucc team in the fall to go as deep as they can in the tournament. I think success breeds success and it leads to a successful winter. Not that the football team wasn't successful - it was. They just didn't make the playoffs."

Pond said the scoring will take care of itself.

"We always have a balanced attack," Pond said. "We like to spread it around and this year will be no different."

The Buccs will again mix things up at both ends of the floor.

"We want to take the break when it is there - and the secondary break," Pond said. "But, we will be running our motion offense and sometimes that is difficult out of that offense. It comes down to how good a decisions the kids make. We are going to have to play good defense. We are going to have to mix things up. I don't think we will be in any one defense for very long. We are going to play man and zone. We are going to have to press some. Again it comes down to who we are playing. We are going to do what we think we have to do to win that game."

SENIORS:#15 Nick Risner, #3 Jett Murphy, #12 Nathan Lyle, #23 Braden Miller, #24 Bradley Wiggins, #11 Zach Parrett, #22 Ryan Gengler.

Parrett is the only true post player on the roster, which is just fine with Pond.

"Zach (Parrett) is 6-4," Pond said. "After that, we have a lot of guys all around 6-0, 6-1 and that is not necessarily a bad thing. We are going to have to execute well at both ends of the floor and it gives us a lot of flexibility with our lineups and rotations. We have a lot of athletic ability."

Covington will be tested early and often with its non-conference schedule.

"Our non-conference schedule is very good," Pond said. "You look at teams like Versailles, Anna, Coldwater and New Bremen. There is the holiday tournament in Piqua. It is a very good non-conference schedule."

And the CCC games will be no different.

"I think there are a ton of good teams in the conference," Pond said. "I have always felt this way about our conference. You have a lot of good coaches and very talented players. That leads to good teams. Bethel has a lot of kids back. Ansonia has almost everyone back. Arcanum has a lot of talent back. Miami East is always going to be tough and teams like Twin Valley South and Tri-Village are going to be in the mix every year. It is going to be another strong year in the conference."

And it will prepare them for the D-IV sectional at Piqua, which as usual, will feature some of the best teams in D-IV.

"I love the Piqua sectional," Pond said. "There are so many good teams there."

And Pond - as always - is excited to see what the season will hold for his Covington team.
