The 1986-87 season was a year of transition for the Buccs. Longtime head coach, Bob Huelsman, retired after the '85-'86 season, turning the fortunes of the Covington basketball program over to his assistant for twelve years, Steve Fisher. Fisher accumulated 177 wins and only 53 losses as coach on the junior varsity level prior to taking over the varsity program.
The Buccs got out to a good start on the season as they won 10 out of 12 games. The rest of the season was a struggle as they only won 3 out of the last 7 games. The Buccs were bounced in the first round of the tournament by Anna by the score of 56-48.
Things do look promising for the future, however. Returning to next year's squad will be 6'7" Lane Evans who has two years of varsity experience under his belt. Lane led the Buccs with 18.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.
Also returning will be Matt Root, a 6'2" guard who averaged 11.4 points a game and Paul McGillivary, a 6'0" guard who contributed off of the bench as the sixth man this season.
The Buccs will loose Scott Alexander, Bruce Martin and Rob Stollmer. Alexander provided the Buccs with senior leadership while scoring 144 points on the season. Rob Stollmer was second on the team in scoring with 283 points for 13.5 avg. Bruce Martin contributed with solid defense while pulling in 53 rebounds and scoring 45 points. Bruce also led the Buccs with 938 assists.
