January 15, 2003 – ARCANUM
The Lady Buccs scratched and clawed their way to a 39-27 win over a tough Arcanum team to remain unbeaten in the Cross County Conference and improve to 12-1 on the season.

Early on it appeared as if Arcanum was on their way to an upset. The Lady Trojans scored the first 7 points of the game on two baskets by Ashley Fulkner and a 3-pointer by Holly Clark.

Covington finally got on the scoreboard midway through the first period on a basket by Meredith Besecker. Heather Fields then scored the final 6 points of the period to give Covington an 8-7 lead.

A pair of Brenda Denlinger free throws gave Arcanum the lead right back to open the second. Heather Fields tied the score by converting a free throw on the front end of a one-and-one, but her second attempt fell short of the mark. Luckily for the Lady Buccs, Audrey Doseck was their to pull down the rebound and give the Lady Buccs the lead for good on the put-back, 11-9.

The Lady Buccs increased their lead to 17-13 by halftime as Fields and Besecker connected on baskets.

Covington opened the second half on a 12-5 run sparked by a layup by Fields and two baskets by Michelle Meyer, one coming from behind the arch. After a Fulkner jumper cut the Covington lead to 30-20, Fields scored back-to-back baskets to Give the Lady Buccs a comfortable 34-20 lead after three periods of play.

Fields increased the Lady Buccs' lead to 16 on a layup to start the final period. Arcanum wouldn't go away, however, as they scored the next 7 points of the contest to close within 36-27.

MaryBeth Bayman and Heather Fields ended all Arcanum hopes of a comeback by nailing 3 of 4 free throws in the final minutes to give Covington a 39-27 win.

Heather Fields led all scorers with 21 points, while Ashley Fulkner dropped in 15 points for Arcanum.

Covington improves to 12-1 on the season and 6-0 in the CCC. The Lady Buccs host Mississinawa Valley on Saturday.
