December 4, 2003 COVINGTON
The Covington girls basketball team sent a message to the Cross County Conference Thursday...and hopes to deliver another one when the Lady Buccs visit Division III powerhouse Versailles Saturday.
Covington jumped out to leads of 25-6 after one quarter and 37-8 at halftime en route to a 61-20 victory over previously unbeaten Bethel in the CCC opener for both teams.
"We wanted to show the CCC what we are about right from the start," Covington senior guard Heather Fields, who led the Lady Buccs with 22 points, said.
The Buccs did it with their defense, forcing 13 turnovers in the first quarter alone.
"We take a lot of pride in our defense," Fields said. "We have been working hard on that and will continue to work on that."
Covington coach Chris Besecker was pleased for the most part as the Buccs pushed the ball up and down the floor from the start.
"That was one of our better games in transition," Besecker said. "We were able to create a lot of opportunities with our defense."
Bethel coach Paul Miller, whose team won the Miami County Tip-Off tournament, knew Covington's defense was the difference.
We just didn't execute at all on offense," Miller said. "I think it was a combination of us not executing and Covington being such a well-coached team. They did a lot of the things we have been working on since Monday."
Miller said the game was good preparation for Franklin Monroe.
"We are a young team," he said. "There is no substitute for experience. Our girls know what it will take to get ready for another good team (Franklin Monroe). Our girls were feeling pretty good after the weekend...and that is good. I told them to remember how they felt after the weekend and how they feel now."
If Besecker had any concerns at all, it was that the Lady Buccs didn't cash in more in transition.
"We missed some great opportunities that we need to finish," he said. "If we do that Saturday against Versailles, we are going to get beat. We won't get many opportunities, but when we do, we need to finish. Versailles is a great team. They play the same great defense and are strong in the post. There is no question we will be in for a strong challenge."
Fields says the Lady Buccs are ready.
"We want to beat Versailles," Fields said. "It has been a long time since we have beaten them. That game is a going to have a big effect on how we play the rest of the season."
Michelle Meyer added 12 points for the Lady Buccs, while Audrey Doseck had 11 points and seven rebounds. Lindsay Hagemeyer scored six points for Bethel and Jenny Kreider pulled down five rebounds.
Covington was 23 of 62 from the floor for 37 percent and 13 of 17 from the line for 76 percent. Bethel was 10 of 28 from the floor for 36 percent and missed all four free throw attempts.
The Lady Buccs won the battle of the boards 28-21.
Covington will play at Versailles Saturday.
