January 10, 2003 – COVINGTON
You know expectations are high in Covington when the Lady Buccs take a 63-35 win over arch rival Bradford and their coach isn't entirely satisfied.

"I'm not happy with our defensive execution," commented Covington coach Chris Besecker. "We just didn't play well defensively."

For a team that prides themselves on defense, the Lady Buccs appeared passive and sluggish. Bradford, to their credit, took advantage for some easy baskets, but it wasn't enough to overcome Covingon's talent.

Despite their struggles, Covington controlled the game from the outset. MaryBeth Bayman jump started the Lady Buccs with 7 points in the opening period. Bradford managed to score only 4 points in the period, 2 coming from the foul line.

The Lady Buccs blew the game open in the second period as Heather Fields scored 11 of her 16 points in the 8:00 stretch. All of Bradford's points in the period came at the hands of Leighanna Miller as Covington built a 33-8 halftime lead.

Bradford ignored the scoreboard and continued to play hard to open the second half. The Lady Railroaders had their most effective period by scoring 12 third quarter points as six players put points on the board.

"I give them (Bradford) a lot of credit because they just kept executing their offense," complemented coach Besecker. "Our defensive execution in the second half wasn't very good, but a lot of that had to do with the way Bradford executed their offense."

Despite Bradford's guts and determination, Covington managed to increase their lead to 56-20 by the end of the third period. Michelle Meyer scored 8 of her game high 20 points in the stanza, including a 3-pointer early in the half.

With the game well in hand Covington went to their bench in the final period and cruised to a 63-25 win.

Michelle Meyer led all scorers with 20 points. Heather Fields and MaryBeth Bayman also reached double figures for the Lady Buccs with 16 and 13 points respectively.

Bradford was led by Leighanna Miller with 10 points.

Covington improves to 11-1 on the season and 5-0 in the CCC. Covington travels to Arcanum on Thursday, January 15th.
